Daniel Auchincloss (Tenor)

Born: Toronto, Canada

The Canadian tenor, Daniel Auchincloss, studied at the University of Toronto, and completed the Masters in Music program at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. After settling in the UK in 1995, he first worked as a Lay Clerk in St George's Chapel, Windsor. He moved from this post to perform with many British ensembles, including The English Concert, the Sixteen, The King痴 Consort, The London Handel Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the BBC Singers. He currently studies with Diane Forlano.

Daniel Auchincloss possesses a high tenor voice of great rarity, and his extensive repertoire ? from medieval to contemporary - has included a number of haute-contre roles. He is ideally suited to the special demands of the baroque repertoire, and sang many performances of 20th Century repertoire during his years with the BBC Singers.

Daniel Auchincloss has performed as a soloist with such groups as the City of London Sinfonia conducted by Richard Hickox, Purcell Quartet, Britten Sinfonia and Gabrieli Consort. During Easter 2001, he was a soloist in a tour of J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment conducted by Sir Roger Norrington, and subsequently sang again for Roger Norrington with the Camerata Academica Salzburg in Rome. His repertoire ranges from medieval to contemporary (including participation in the World Premiere of a commission by Francis Grier) with an emphasis on early music and recent performances have included a number of haute-contre roles.

Daniel Auchincloss' engagements have included the role of Damon in George Frideric HandelAcis and Galatea with the Gabrieli Consort, the role of Eumete in Monteverdi痴 Il ritorno d旦lisse in patria under the musical direction of Michael Chance, and Antonio VivaldiJubilate, o amoeni chori with the King痴 Consort. Recent engagements have included his BBC Promenade Concerts début in Monteverdi痴 1610 Vespers with The King痴 Consort, a tour and recording on Deutsche Grammophon of Biber痴 Requiem in F minor with the Gabrieli Consort, a tour of Charpentier痴 Messe de Minuit with the Gabrieli Consort conducted by Paul McCreesh, a tour and recording on Harmonia Mundi of Biber痴 Missa Christi Resurgentis with the English Concert, La Pythonisse in Charpentier痴 David et Jonathas with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (under Emmanuelle Haïm), Damon in G.F. HandelAcis and Galatea and the Angel in Charpentier痴 Canticum in nativitatem Domini with the Gabrieli Consort, and Eumete in Monteverdi痴 Il ritorno d旦lisse in patria, under the musical direction of Michael Chance.

Daniel Auchincloss is featured on a number of recordings, including a recording of Bach Cantatas for Radio Svizzera di lingua Italianna in Lugano conducted by Diego Fasolis, and has taken part in the Complete Monteverdi Sacred Music recordings with the King痴 Consort for Hyperion.

Engagements in 2004-2005 include his BBC Promenade Concerts debut in Monteverdi痴 1610 Vespers with The King痴 Consort, a tour and recording on Deutsche Grammophon of Biber痴 Requiem in F minor with the Gabrieli Consort, and a tour and recording on Harmonia Mundi of Biber痴 Missa Christi Resurgentis with the English Concert.
