AI literacy: Why every teen needs to learn this essential skill
Adolescents need to develop the know-how to question technology, spot bias, and make smart choices in a digital world
In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) quietly shapes everything from homework assignments to entertainment recommendations, a new educational imperative has emerged: AI literacy.
APA’s health advisory, "Artificial Intelligence and Adolescent Well-being," makes clear understanding AI’s workings, benefits, limitations, and risks has become a crucial skill for adolescents.
AI literacy extends far beyond knowing how to use technology tools. Psychology shows adolescents need a comprehensive understanding of what AI is, how it functions, and how algorithmic bias can embed discrimination and misinformation into seemingly neutral systems.
The challenge is particularly acute because AI-generated content can appear authoritative and accurate while containing significant flaws. Unlike human-created content where teens might naturally question sources and motivations, AI outputs often carry an implicit stamp of technological objectivity that can be deeply misleading, the advisory says.
The bias problem
Perhaps most critically, teens need to understand these biases don’t just create minor inaccuracies—they can perpetuate myths, spread antiquated beliefs, and generate discriminatory information that particularly harms vulnerable groups, says S. Craig Watkins, PhD, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin and a member of the health advisory’s expert panel.
"Teens are naturally curious and impressionable, which makes it even more important to help them recognize that AI doesn’t always reflect truth—it reflects data," Watkins says. "And if those data are biased, the answers will be, too. Teaching young people to question what they see isn’t about making them skeptical of everything—it’s about empowering them to develop greater agency and to think critically about AI-generated content."
Consider how AI might respond to questions about career options, mental health resources, or historical events. If the training data reflect societal biases, the AI will amplify those prejudices while presenting them as factual, objective information. For adolescents still forming their worldviews, this presents serious risks.
Essential skills for critical evaluation
Young users must learn to critically evaluate AI-generated responses by asking essential questions: Who created this system? What data helped train it? Whose perspectives might be missing? What assumptions are built into these recommendations?
Critically, teens need to learn to question what they see, not just what they read. AI can now generate realistic images, videos, and audio that our brains naturally assume are real. This technology is being misused to create inappropriate images of youth and content for cyberbullying, causing serious psychological harm.
With the rise of generative AI, we’re increasingly being asked to override our brain’s tendency to trust and rely on what we’ve seen with our own eyes, says Brendesha Tynes, PhD, director of the Center for Empowered Learning and Development with Technology at the University of Southern California, and another member of the health advisory’s expert panel.
Adults can model this critical thinking in everyday interactions with AI. When encountering AI-generated content together with teens, demonstrate the questioning process: wonder aloud about sources, discuss potential biases, and seek multiple perspectives on important topics.
"The goal is to cultivate informed users who approach AI tools with a critical lens, appropriate skepticism, understanding, and creativity," Tynes says. "Young people should feel empowered to question AI recommendations, seek multiple sources for important decisions, recognize when human judgment and expertise remain irreplaceable, and even transform AI systems in order to create a more just world."
Beyond developing these critical evaluation skills, we must acknowledge that AI is being misused in more harmful ways that directly target teens. Predatory individuals are using AI to create explicit images without consent, generate sophisticated manipulation tactics, and facilitate cyberbullying at unprecedented scales. While we focus on building protective skills, teens need awareness of these serious threats without creating unnecessary fear.
A collaborative approach
Implementing comprehensive AI literacy requires coordinated action. Educators need to integrate AI understanding into core curricula spanning computer science, social studies, and ethics courses. This isn’t just about technical education—it’s about developing critical thinking skills that help students navigate an AI-saturated information environment, says APA Chief of Psychology Mitch Prinstein, PhD.
"Teachers themselves need substantial training on AI concepts, algorithmic bias recognition, and responsible AI use," Prinstein says. "They must be equipped to facilitate discussions about AI’s ethical implications, including how algorithmic bias can perpetuate discrimination, how AI-generated misinformation spreads, and how automated systems increasingly make decisions that affect students’ futures. Hands-on learning experiences with AI tools should emphasize critical evaluation rather than passive consumption."
Policymakers face equally important responsibilities, such as helping develop national and state-level guidelines for AI literacy education, allocating funding for research and teacher training programs, enacting legislation mandating age-appropriate AI education in schools, and promoting public awareness about AI’s risks and benefits.
Technology developers bear significant responsibility for creating transparency around their systems. Companies should provide accessible explanations of how their AI algorithms function and what data collection practices they employ, especially systems adolescents encounter, notes Prinstein. This includes developing educational tools that help users understand AI operations and collaborating with educators to create age-appropriate AI literacy curricula.
Equally important, bias detection and mitigation tools should be built directly into AI platforms, along with simple reporting mechanisms that empower users to flag problematic outputs.
Building future ready citizens
Developing AI literacy represents both an urgent need and a long-term investment in democratic participation and individual agency, the advisory noted. As AI systems increasingly influence education, employment, health care, and social interactions, citizens who understand these technologies will be better positioned to make informed choices and advocate for responsible development.
"The goal is to help young people understand AI isn’t just about protecting them—it’s about preparing them to lead," says Prinstein. "When teens feel confident asking questions, challenging assumptions, and making thoughtful choices about technology, we’re not just building AI literacy—we’re building future-ready citizens."
