Advocating for LGBTQ+ Equality
Find in-depth information on policy issues, advocacy tools, and resources for supporting the LGBTQ+ community. Each page details a different type of legislation or effort threatening or protecting the rights, health, and well-being of the LGBTQ+ community, such as legislation to allow businesses to refuse services to LGBTQ+ people based on the owners’ religious beliefs, or banning efforts to change people’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. Each section includes comprehensive talking points, relevant psychological science, APA resolutions and clinicial guidelines, and specific examples of state or local advocacy by psychologists. Any psychologist who has written to their state’s legislative representative, provided testimony at a committee hearing, or participated in any other direct advocacy is encouraged to share copies of letters or testimony videos to aid and inform other advocates.
To contribute an example, email APA’s Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity Portfolio.
