Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Khaled Abdel Ghaffar payed a courtesy visit to MEXT Minister Masahiko Shibayama on October 9th. The education heads exchanged views on promoting cooperation in the fields of education, science and technology.

In 2016, the leaders of Japan and Egypt signed the “Egypt-Japan Education Partnership”, or the EJEP, a joint declaration under Japan’s Overseas Developmental Assistance (ODA) implemented by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The agreement aims to advance cooperation for Egypt’s entire education system throughout pre-school to higher education, by providing comprehensive support making the best use of Japan’s educational features.

As a part of the initiative, Japan is providing support to open 35 public schools in Egypt that have incorporated Japanese-style educational contents centered on special activities including cleaning classrooms and class meetings.
Minister Abdel Ghaffar said he hopes to expand the number of schools incorporating Japanese-style education up to 100, and further advance bilateral cooperation in the fields of education, science and technology.

Minister Shibayama said MEXT will work to steadily advance bilateral cooperation in specific fields, in addition to collaborating with JICA and relevant organizations in the areas of technical higher-education including providing educational contents and materials of technical colleges countries’ have shown interest in, and dispatching Japanese specialists.
