Photos of paintings always come back disappointing — phone-camera noise, JPEG compression, a slight blur from holding the camera. This tool sharpens and upscales art-style imagery (paintings, illustrations, watercolours, digital art) while preserving the brush texture that makes the artwork itself.

Photo-restoration vs art-restoration

Our Restore Old Photo tool is tuned for photographic faces and skin. Our Anime Enhancer is tuned for clean line-art and flats. This one fills the middle: paintings, watercolours, illustrations, and digital art that have texture (brush strokes, paper grain) which a photo upscaler would smooth out and a line-art upscaler would over-sharpen.

The model was fine-tuned on a dataset of high-resolution scans of paintings (oil, acrylic, watercolour, gouache) plus high-res digital illustrations. It's learned what brush strokes look like at high res and how to extrapolate them from a lower-res source.

What it handles well

• Phone photos of paintings — gallery shots, your kid's drawing, a painting you bought.
• Old book illustrations — fairy tales, vintage children's books, technical illustrations.
• Digital art exports — Procreate or Photoshop files saved at low res.
• Concept art and matte paintings — environment art that needs to be poster-sized.

Workflow tips

1. Crop tight before upscaling. Background wall of a museum shot wastes resolution. Crop to the canvas first.
2. Fix exposure first. Phone photos of paintings often skew dark or flash-yellow. Run Exposure Fix before enhancing.
3. One pass usually works. The model is conservative on purpose — it preserves the source feel rather than over-sharpening.
