Manage Autocorrect in Google Docs

Important: You can only manage Autocorrect in Google Docs on a computer. You can't do this on an Android or an iPhone and iPad.

To fix spelling and capitalization, you can use Autocorrect in Google Docs. This feature can also find links, lists, and quotes.

You can turn Autocorrect on or off. You can also turn off certain word changes, like substitutions and spelling suggestions.

You can use Autocorrect in:

  • English
  • French
  • German
  • Portuguese
  • Spanish

Turn off Autocorrect

  1. On your computer, open a file in Google Docs.
  2. Click Tools and then Preferences and then Substitutions.
  3. Next to the function, uncheck the box to turn off certain automated corrections, like:
    • Automatic capitalization
    • Spelling corrections
    • Link detection
  4. Optional: To turn off all automatic substitutions, next to "Automatic substitution," uncheck the box.
  5. Click OK.

Change Autocorrect settings

Turn off automatic word changes
  1. On your computer, open a file in Google Docs.
  2. Click Tools and then Preferences and then Substitutions.
    • Turn off certain automatic substitutions: Next to the word, uncheck the box.
    • Remove automatic substitutions: Next to the word, click Remove remove.
  3. Click OK.
Fix a word spelling
  1. On your file, right-click on the word.
  2. Click Always correct to ["word"].
Undo automatic fix
  1. After the word is fixed, click the word.
  2. To permanently turn off automatic correction, click Undo.
Get help with spelling

If you spell a word wrong, it has a red line under it. When you click on the word, you'll find a spelling suggestion. If there's no suggestion, you can:

  • Change the word
  • Add the word to your personal dictionary
  • Ignore the suggestion
