The keyboard on this second-hand laptop is non-functional.

After consulting online tutorials, I performed the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Accessed Device Manager.

  • Uninstalled the keyboard driver.

  • Restarted the system.

Upon restarting, the keyboard functioned temporarily for several minutes before failing again. The issue persists even when an external USB keyboard is connected.

The previous owner suggested that reinstalling the operating system would resolve the problem.

What steps can be taken to diagnose and repair the keyboard without reinstalling Windows?

  • Please, add to your post what the exact Windows version you're running on your laptop? Also, does the model and specs of your laptop. Commented Dec 1 at 13:04

The easy way to test if the operating system (OS) is at fault is to make a boot device, such as a USB drive, with an alternate OS. Two suggestions:

  • Hiren’s BootCD PE uses Windows 11 Preinstallation Environment to make a number of utilities available. If the keyboard functions under WinPE, then you know at least Windows 11 is compatible.
  • Ubuntu on a bootable USB device can be used to test if Linux works with that keyboard.

If neither work with that keyboard, there's likely a hardware issue. Otherwise, reinstall the OS.
