Thomas Freeman worked for the Thames Iron Works as a ships fireman. In 1895 Arnold Hills, the owner of the Thames Iron Works, decided to establish his own football team. Freeman joined the club but rarely played in the first-team. However, he did play in the deciding game of the West Ham Charity Cup in 1896 and the club's first F.A. Cup match against Chatham.
