Sounds like you have a problem with the permissions on your home
directory. Can you create the directory ~/.matplotlib yourself and make
it writable by yourself? The commands to do that would be something like
mkdir ~/.matplotlib
chmod u+w ~/.matplotlib

Can it be used to do a projection not only on the xoy axis but also on the
xoz and yoz?

Try calling subplots_adjust(right=0.99) before calling colorbar. Then 
the colorbar axes will be generated by stealing space from the enlarged 
main axes.
