Hi Sean,
I just checked - the hyphenation you want does not work in LaTeX in math mode. Try removing the "$"-signs in your string command. Then the hyphenation should work.

I'm trying to specify a range of numbers in a particular legend using LaTeX. In order to do so I'm feeding it the string: r"80ドル--120". The output should be have an endash, "80–120", but I'm getting "80--120". This is a standard feature of LaTeX ( http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/LaTeX/Formatting ), so I don't know what's going on.

I think you may have to do something like "label=r'\textbf{label1}'".

Now, I would like to make a legend with bold fonts.
So, I tried two options:
1)
from matplotlib.font_manager import fontManager, FontProperties
font= FontProperties(weight='bold',size=26)
plot([1,2,3],[1,2,3],'k',label='label1')
legend(loc='lower left', prop=font)
2) After the legend(loc='lower left', prop=font) statement, I put:
legend1=gca().get_legend()

Neither of these options changed the legend font weight to bold.

I also needed to use Frank's approach (described in the link above) to
make my animation works. Is it possible to fix the code in the

Adding
import matplotlib
matplotlib.use('GTKAgg')
solved the problem.
But now I get this warning:

Hi:
I am trying to use this code http://tinyurl.com/44zcpfk (Scipy
cookbook) to make an animation where the background is fix and only a
line is updated. However, after executing the code, I only get a
window with an empty plot. Some debugging shows that the update_line
function is not being called.
I changed the use of numerix by numpy with respect to the original
code. Other than that is the same.
Any advice on how to fix the problem? Or may be this way is obsolete,
but all the animation examples I've found so far don't consider a
fixed background.

I've been playing with the script and I now know a little bit more about
what is wrong. I can get the full graph space to plot by changing:
ax_mass = SubplotHost(fig, 1,1,1, aspect=1.)
to
ax_mass = SubplotHost(fig, 1,1,1)
but then a line is never drawn. I have removed the x and y axis limits and
it plots the axes for the limits of the date but no line for the graph? Here
is the relevant part of the code:

Hi,
Fixed it by deleting fontList.cache in my tmp directory that was being used
by the web server.
Maybe this helps someone else.

You can set "verbose.level" to "debug-annoying" in your matplotlibrc. 
If the webserver is collecting standard output, the debug messages 
should end up in the web server logs.

Hi all,
I'm trying to use matplotlib to generate some graphs on a webpage for me.
 Everything works pretty well, except, I cannot make a change to the fonts.
 I've set up the scripts to be called as a cgi script or to be run from the
command line. When I run them from the command line, I get the correct font
(Arial) yet when run from the web page, it uses the CMR10 font. Arial is
installed on the linux system.
I've thought the problem might be related to which matplotlibrc file each
script might be using, but when I check matplotlib.matplotlib_fname() from
the command line and web page, they return the same.
Maybe there is a way to get the --verbose-debug output when run from a web
page? That could help me figure out what's going on.
I know I could manually specify the font using font_manager, but that's not
really ideal as I'd have to do it manually for each graph. I'd rather have
a global solution for all my graphs. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't see a good reason why this was not done. (Maybe someone else 
has the historical context, if any).
Would you mind adding an issue to the tracker for this?

This bug or feature? is still in matplotlib 0.99.1.1 (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS)
More precisely scatter using symbols with zero area ('x', '+') will not
pick, regardless of the float value in picker.
Although this DOES work with plot, you can't vary the marker size between
points like you can with scatter.
I have also confirmed this in a version of the example in the docs
http://matplotlib.sourceforge.net/users/event_handling.html#picking-exercise
Which I could upload, but the code below is just fine.
If this is a feature, I suggest it be stated in the documentation.

Straightfoward solution is to deselect zoom or pan by clicking those buttons
again. The cursor returns to the "Arrow" shape.
Any better solution?

I would like to put a gtk.Button on top of a FigureCanvas. But whatever
I try the FigureCanvas stays always on top hiding the button.
Below is an example where I can change the order of buttons
by switching the following two lines
 lay.put(but1,360,260)
 lay.put(but2,360,275)
but this doesn't work for FigureCanvas
 lay.put(canvas,0,0)
Any help appreciated.
