Your errors come from the shell interpreter. It seems that sh, and not
python, is parsing the script.
Add the following line at the start:
#!/usr/bin/env python
and try again.

No, at least not currently.

I recently asked a question along the same lines...
MATLAB has a command, print, and it allows you to output a figure to a file, such as a .ps file and it has a switch '-append' so that you can append multiple plots to the same file.
Is there a switch for the pylab command, 'savefig' to do the same thing? There does not seem to be an equivalent print command.

Hi,
running a python-script using matplotlib I get the following error message:
sh: mc: line 1: syntax error: unexpected end of file
sh: error importing function definition for `mc'
sh: mc: line 1: syntax error: unexpected end of file
sh: error importing function definition for `mc'
The script starts with a simple example:
...
from pylab import *
fig = figure(1)
plot([1,2,3])
close(fig)
...
Using matplotlib from IPython works fine. The script above has been invoked
via Pydev
 Thanks in advance,
Chris

Sorry, I reply to myself, the fill function needs the 'facecolor' keyword.

Hi,
 I am using matplotlib to visualize my data, but the data sometimes have
several sets.
Can I plot each set as usual to a EPS file, and combine these EPS file into
a single ps file,
each page of this ps file is only one EPS file I got before.
Thanks.

Hi,
Am I right if I presume that line No. 4 in the second listing in
http://www.scipy.org/Cookbook/Matplotlib/Show_colormaps should read
(0.5, 0.1, 0.7) in order to match the description? But then, of course
the example plot would look different.
I hesitate to change what I don't fully understand ...

You can turn off the figure frame entirely
 fig = figure(frameon=False)
Or you can leave the frame on, but set the alpha channel
 fig = figure()
 fig.figurePatch.set_alpha(0.1)
Does that help? Note you may want to set the alpha of the axesPatch as well
 ax.axesPatch.set_alpha(0.5)
you can do the same for legends, where l is a Legend instance
 l.legendPatch.set_alpha(0.5)

Hi Patrick,
Thanks for your message!

Mmmm, this is OK, let's say I wanted a figure with a transparent
background. I can't find a set_fill() method for this class. I have
tried the facecolor attribute, but no luck. I think I got this right.
I am using the Agg backend (does this make a difference?). The files
are RGBA pngs, but the alpha channel is always 255, so my background
is always white, as opposed to transparent.
Am I doing something wrong? I am using matplotlib 0.90.0. Here's some
sample code
import pylab
FaceColor=3D(1.0, 1.0, 1.0, 0.0 )
fig =3D pylab.figure(figsize=3D(6,1.5))
ax =3D fig.add_axes([0.05, 0.4, 0.9, 0.5])
cmap =3D mpl.cm.jet
norm =3D mpl.colors.Normalize(vmin=3D0, vmax=3D1)
cb =3D mpl.colorbar.ColorbarBase(ax, cmap=3Dcmap, \
=09=09=09=09=09=09=09norm=3Dnorm,orientation=3D'horizontal' )
cb.set_alpha(0.0)
fig.set_facecolor(FaceColor)
pylab.savefig( "fichero.png", dpi=3D72, facecolor=3DFaceColor)
cheers!

Hi Jose,
lg = legend()
lg.get_frame().set_fill(False)
works for me. Let me know if this fixes it.

Hi,
I have a small script which reads a csv file with several
columns and puts it into an scipay array, which
I can plot using matplotlib. It works fine, but just with
explicitly setting the number of columns:
 res=loglog(array_mapped[:,0],array_mapped[:,1], 'b',
 array_mapped[:,0],array_mapped[:,2], 'g',
 array_mapped[:,0],array_mapped[:,3], 'r',
 array_mapped[:,0],array_mapped[:,4], 'y',
 array_mapped[:,0],array_mapped[:,5], 'k',
 array_mapped[:,0],array_mapped[:,6], '-bo',
linewidth = 2)
Is there a way to define the number of columns, which I want
to plot? Or even better, can I apply an sys.argv to
define the plotted columns, e.g.
"python csvplot.py all": which plots all columns with its
value for the y-coordinate and the line-number as x-coordinate
"python csvplot.py all1": which does the same as above, but
using column 1 as abscissae
"python csvplot.py 1 2 5": which plots columns 2 and 5
against column 1...
Would be nice, if anybody has an idea, how to achieve this!?
Regards!

Hi,
in Matlab, it is possible to set the figure window title by using:
figure('Name','Simulation Plot Window')
You can even disable the numbering (i.e. the "Figure 1:" tag in the title)
by using:
figure('Name','Simulation Plot Window','NumberTitle','off')
Is there some way of doing a similar thing with matplotlib/pylab?
The reason I need this is that I use a python script to do plots. I call
this script several times to create several plots, and each plot ends up
with the same title (Figure 1). As I cannot create all the plots from a
single script call, I am stuck with these identical window titles.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Angel

For all those who want to submit publications to the IEEE and who are
using matplotlib with the "usetex" option,
The IEEE require all fonts to be embedded (see
http://216.228.1.34/pdfexpress/frhelpnologin.asp and
http://ras.papercept.net/conferences/support/pdftips.php). Matplotlib
unfortunately does not embed all the fonts into it's EPS figures.
The quick way to get matplotlib to embed all fonts into the EPS figures
(instead of using PNGs) is to:
1) open "backend_ps.py" and "texmanager.py"
2) search for "dvips -q"
3) and add "-j0 -Ppdf -Pdownload35 -G0" just after the "-q" (see
http://mpa.itc.it/markus/highres_pdf.html)

If not already addressed:
In order for pylab.hlines to handle scalar xmin and xmax args, the following
code should be inserted at line 2328 in axes.py
 if len(xmin)==1:
 xmin = xmin*ones(y.shape, typecode(y))
 if len(xmax)==1:
 xmax = xmax*ones(y.shape, typecode(y))
Analogous code is already in place for VLINES, but not for HLINES.

All I can say is that pure ipython is very likely to NOT work at all.
It makes too many assumptions about being in a terminal/readline to
work inside a random GUI. We do have in SVN (saw branch) a prototype
WX client that will allow this, but it's still a looong way from being
done.
For GTK, some people did hack something out:
http://ipython.scipy.org/moin/Cookbook/EmbeddingInGTK
that works. I suppose you might be able to implement something
similar in some other GUI, but I've never tried.
By all means please post a similar page on the wiki if you do
something along these lines and succeed!
best,
f

It must have been fixed in svn. I don't see it with the test you provided.

Hi devs,
This is a quick report of a bug in 0.90.1 (via debian testing
package). Sorry, I'm not sure if this is still present in svn, and I'm
keen to keep to the debian packages for now, so if it is already fixed
then feel free to ignore.
Bug is repeatably demonstrated by:
import pylab as p, numpy as n
p.figure()
p.errorbar(n.arange(10), n.random.random(10), n.random.random(10))
p.legend()
p.clf()
finishing with
AttributeError: LineCollection instance has no attribute 'get_xdata'
Neither legend or errorbar calls on their own block clf like this.
Cheers,
A.

hi,
i am looking for help in using matplotlib inside a graphical IDE in mac osx
and preferabley even ipython with matplotlib inside an IDE. i am used to
interact with the python interpreter (inside ipython, even inside
ipython-inside-emacs) while several plot windows are open, but i don't have
any success using a graphical IDE.
i tried free IDEs (eric3, eric4) and commercial ones (komodo, wing ide) but
all had the same problem: the debugger was blocked as long as the matplotlib
window was open. i focussed on QtAgg since eric uses Qt, but i also tried
TkAgg.
does anyone have a suggestion what i might be doing wrong?
thanks,
 kilian

To do that you need to use the axes command (a subplot is just a
special case of an axes on a regular grid). For example, you could do
(the arguments are left, bottom, width, height)
axes([0.1, 0.7, 0.4, 0.25])
axes([0.55, 0.7, 0.4, 0.25])
axes([0.1, 0.1, 0.85, 0.55])
or some variant like that..

That means too that having a plot on 2/3 of the screen is not possible, I
suppose ?
