Velocity Potential

For a particle with zero vorticity, we can define a scalar velocity potential such that

(1)

The continuity equation of fluid flow then gives

(2)

so satisfies Laplace's equation. Eric Weisstein's World of Math The impermeability boundary condition at the stationary wall requires

(3)

The flow pattern depends only on the instantaneous boundary conditions, not on the history of the flow as long as

(4)

where is the timescale number.
