Uniaxial

Crystals have two different indices of refraction along crystallographic axes. Light entering such a crystal is broken up into a so-called Ordinary Ray and an Extraordinary Ray. Depending on the relative size of and (sign of the Birefringence called the Optical Sign), uniaxial crystals are described as positive uniaxial or negative uniaxial.
