Supersaturation

Supersaturation is the dissolving of a larger quantity of solute in a solution than would normally be possible. It can occur because surface energy is required to condense a drop from a vapor, and the energy barrier is difficult to overcome unless nucleation centers (condensation nuclei) are present, in which case the drop only needs energy to overcome surface tension over a fraction of its surface area, or .
