Reynolds Number

The Reynolds number for a flow through a pipe is defined as

(1)

where is the density of the fluid, is the velocity scale, d is the pipe diameter, and is the kinematic viscosity of the fluid. Poiseuille (laminar) flow is experimentally found to occur for . At larger Reynolds numbers, flow becomes turbulent.
