Petzval Condition

The displacement of an image point at height from the paraxial image plane is

(1)

where the sum is over layers with indices of refraction and focal lengths .

For two lenses, this can be made to equal zero if

(2)

i.e.,

(3)

which is known as the Petzval condition.
