Mass Spectrometer

Mass spectroscopy can be performed on an unknown compound to determine molecular mass, elemental composition, functional groups, and structural features. Mass spectrometers operate by stripping molecules of their electrons, accelerating them by a potential difference, then shooting the ions into a uniform magnetic field between a pair of so-called "dees". The magnetic field causes the ions' path to bend, and by observing the radius of their semicircular path, their mass (and therefore identity) is determined. The charge on the ion must also be known, but is usually or .
