A physics demonstration instrument consisting of two oppositely charged electrodes mounted on a base and curving slightly away from one another at increasing height. A plasma arc jumps the air gap between the electrodes, and propagates upward until it reaches the top of the electrodes, then disperses. Jacob's ladder can be seen in old science fiction films and some physics classrooms.
