Fraunhofer Diffraction--Elliptical Aperture

Fraunhofer diffraction around an elliptical aperture of semimajor axes a and b can be computed from the general equation for Fraunhofer diffraction

(1)

by switching to polar coordinates. Given an elliptical aperture with semimajor axis Eric Weisstein's World of Math a, semiminor axis b, and position angle of the semimajor axis Eric Weisstein's World of Math aligned with the coordinate system (u, v) of the projection plane, the diffraction wavefunction is given by

where the integral is taken over the ellipse.
