Electromotive Force

The electromotive force (often abbreviated "EMF" and denoted ) is an archaic term for an induced electric potential (i.e., an induced voltage). Batteries are the most common source of EMFs. Since an EMF is a voltage, it is given by a line integral Eric Weisstein's World of Math of the form
