Effusion

Diffusion due to thermal motion is called effusion. Graham's law of effusion states that the ratio of times for two gases to diffuse the same distance is given by the square root of the inverse ratio of their molecular masses, i.e.,

This follows from the dependence of velocities in the Maxwell distribution.
