Buoyancy

Archimedes' principle of buoyancy states that the buoyant force exerted on a floating body is equal to the weight of the volume of water which is displaced by that body. Since the weight of water is about 62 pounds per cubic foot, huge forces result from large displacements, so it becomes understandable how steel ships float. This law or principle is used in determining specific gravity of various substances.
