Apodization

Obscuring the central portion of an aperture in order to recover the high spatial frequencies lost in the low-pass filtering which occurs in receiver electronics. It is also used to "stop-down" lenses in order to screen off the outer portion of a lens, which can introduce spherical aberration, and increase the depth of field.
