Wikimedia LGBT+ Strategy 2026–2028

[edit ]

Our mission

[edit ]

We ensure that LGBT+ people, communities and their cultures are represented in Wikimedia projects. We do this by supporting LGBT+ people and allies across the world safely to improve LGBT+ content, and to access and participate in Wikimedia projects and related Open Knowledge projects.

Our vision

[edit ]

Five years from now, we envision

  • our independent organisation to be globally recognized as the most important advocate for, and advisor on LGBT+ Open Knowledge and the people that create it;
  • the Wikimedia Movement to be offering sustained programmes that assure queer safety, representation and sharing across Wikimedia projects and languages, as well as a framework of widely accepted standards and norms for queer content, and its creation from original sources; and
  • a world in which access and contribution to free knowledge is equitable, inclusive and accepting of LGBT+ history and reality.

Our values and principles

[edit ]
Safety
We emphasize the safety of our community, as we understand that queer people are still persecuted in many regions of the world. We do this by ensuring that there are always options to contribute anonymously, and that volunteers have access to tools, training and necessary support for their personal safety.
Visibility and voice
We believe that queer people and their knowledge should be seen on Wikimedia projects. We are committed to ensuring LGBT+ people have access to queer related information and facts about their lives, culture, health and politics in their own languages. We are advocates for ensuring that queer people have a voice in the Wikimedia movement.
Community
We are committed to building a welcoming community for every LGBT+ Wikimedian and allies. We do this by encouraging "do-ocracy", by providing appropriately tailored supports, and by leading the development of best LGBT+ practices, policies and learning with affiliates.
Respect
We promote and ensure respectful treatment of volunteers, employees and respectful ways of representing LGBTQ+ people
Joy
We believe that the process of creation, publication and providing access to knowledge is a joyful act. We help volunteers and readers enjoy and celebrate queer knowledge and culture.
Accountability and transparency
We believe in community-based governance for the Wikimedia projects. We comply with and assess our compliance with governance policies that assure transparency and equity in decision-making.

Goal 2: Conditions for developing content

Establish the conditions to increase, maintain, protect and diversify reliable LGBT+ content

  • Objective 2.1: Encourage the creation of balanced, general LGBT+ content, including all areas of LGBTQ+ experience beyond topics of oppression and controversy.
  • Objective 2.2: By 2029 establish methods to identify and protect/stabilize LGBT+ content that are high risk or frequently targeted.
