WikiSWOT is about building a SWOT analysis of the World's places, starting with Earth as a whole and moving down to different administration levels, eg country, region, town, communities...

  • each place has a SWOT and a SWOT is for one place only. Places are defined at different levels: Earth, Countries, Regions, Towns.
  • SWOTs are updated in time. As places evolve so does the SWOT analysis.
  • SWOTs provide a synthetic overview of the status of a place, with the four quadrants of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. Each quadrant contains bullet points. Each bullet point has a wiki page for a full description and discussion.
  • SWOT bullet points can include any "theme" (eg environment, economy, etc...), as long as they are relevant to and focused on the place.
  • SWOTS are ground for discussions and, hopefully, action for the local communities.

My initial idea was exclusively focused on the world's threats, eg climate change, state of the seas, growing income inequalities, etc... I would love to have one website where I can follow the SWOTs for Earth, the country I live in and the town I live in, where I could add my own contributions and discuss with other users how weaknesses can be overcome, threats avoided, opportunities seized and strengths increased.

SWOT is a business tool but it could be applied to places with some level of generalisation. The "SWOT decision makers" would be anyone having some level of involvement with the place, ie "the citizens", and at the very least the official local administrators. Ultimately this information could be connected to open source governance initiatives (or host an ad hoc one), in the need for new legislation or the modification of existing laws.

One of the (many) challenges of the project will be the display and navigation. Some places could have potentially many bullet points in their SWOT. They need to be ranked/prioritised by order of importance to highlight the main ones, possibly by using community votes.

Happy to change the name! I think SWOT gives a clear idea of what it is about, however I am not sure how popular the term is.

Demos

[edit ]

Not a demo per se but a couple of wireframes to give an idea of what it could look like. @ https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1YTLjxcvD3lFN1TC11kNbkxaQuS3q6kXNY8njADiyzYY/edit?usp=sharing

Obviously it could look completely different, but the main ideas are in there.

  1. Weak support. Seems reasonable, but can another wiki take care of this? --Jakob (talk)
I looked around and haven't found anything close enough. The main difference as I see it, is the multi level SWOT. You can view/edit a SWOT at different geographical "levels", eg earth/continent/regions/etc... with local communities being formed, possibly to discuss the different S, W, O and T based on their own personal aspirations and concerns. --Leforthomas (talk) 10:34, 11 January 2014 (UTC) [reply ]
  1. very interesting idea, this tool is totally compatible with free community power --Vev (talk) 15:59, 23 July 2014 (UTC) [reply ]
