WikiBunk is a crowd-sourced fact-check for rumors, hoaxes, political or corporate claims, viral videos, and pop-culture memes that are currently subject to little or no scrutiny.
Deficiency of Snopes.com
Currently the default lookup tool for conspiracy theories, hoaxes, urban legends, and old wives' tales is Snopes.com. It serves a useful purpose; it just does a poor job of it. It has uncorrected technical problems dating back to the 1990s such as outdated pop-up ads, right-click blocking, and ancient design. It also succumbs to perils common to any site with centralized, amateur content curation: limits to breadth of information, preachiness and lack of NPOV, and inability to respond to the changing nature of rumors and hoaxes.
Purpose of WikiBunk
On the internet proliferates a wealth of garbage. Conspiracies, fake viral videos, and misleading viral memes run rampant. WikiBunk would serve as a community-run verification and debunking resource providing links to sources that can prove or disprove myths and hoaxes and also backstory information where available.
