Talk:European Wikimedia chapter
Add topicSomething like this has already been discussed on fr:. To me it seems that the conditions to registrate a non-profit organisation are not better nor worse than any other European countries I know. In France, the registration costs around 25 € and the chairman needs not be a French national. In Belgium, there is a special provision in the law for European non-profit organisations. Otherwise, yes a European organisation can have some use, this has to defined before deciding if it should set in Finland or elsewhere. Just my 0.02 €. I would like to know what people from the German chapter think about think, as well as soon-to-be-created European chapters. British? Italian? Spanish? Dutch? Polish? Others? - ACK. I don't see any need of an European chapter, at least at the moment. As I wrote here, we should keep the international structure as simple as possible. -- Arne (akl) 10:15, 24 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- Agreed. To me, a chapter is related to a country, and as a world wide influence through the network Anthere
Arranging too many subchapters, we might lose the focus -- why we are doing it. The german local chapter is centered around their german-language wikipedia, what would the core of a british chapter be? Now, it seems to me that we don't need to organize ourselves in neat subchapters and subsubchapters, if we don't have content in common to care about. What would the exchange inside a european chapter be that could not be global? ✏ Sverdrup 03:05, 15 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- It's not true that the German chapter is centered around the German language Wikipedia. Its purpose is to raise money (especially from Germany) to support *all* Wikimeda projects. -- Arne (akl) 11:21, 15 Aug 2004 (UTC)
I'm noting that the June 2004 proposals for a European Chapter are still (apparently) 'live', though totally inactive for over a year, so unless anyone has any objections I would propose that the idea (and page) is marked as "Idea considered, not proceeded with" formally. This is on the grounds that
- We now have more Chapters in existence (or having the process for creation clearly marked out),
- We would require to change the legal setup of those Chapters to make them 'look to' a European Chapter rather than the Foundation,
- Creating such subsidiarity may not be possible, sensible or legal within the jurisdiction of the country Chapters
- There has been no clear evidence that such an intermediate level would benefit either the Foundation, the Chapters in each country, nor the readers or editors of the Wikimedia projects.
- There are probably more beneficial ways for Chapters to interact with each other directly than via another layer of bureaucracy
