Proposal:Wikimedia Homeschooling

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Wikimedia Homeschooling is a tool that links Wikimedia editing with relevant education authorities. It is mainly for students in high school but primary school students can use it if they have the knowledge.

What you need

[edit ]

Minimum

[edit ]
  • Wikimedia account with at least 10 character password
  • 64-bit operating system (xampp does not support 32-bit and 32-bit is outdated)
  • 1.5GHz dual core or higher/1.0GHz quad core or higher
  • 3072MB free disk space
  • 8192MB RAM
  • At least 12mpbs download speed
  • At least 4mbps upload speed to use the publish to Wikimedia feature
[edit ]
  • Wikimedia account with at least 16 character password
  • Recommended at least 10 inch display
  • Recommended 25mbps download speed
  • Recommended 10mbps upload speed
  • MediaWiki is pretty light on computer but more internet speed is better

How to join

[edit ]

If you already have an account or you manually create one yourself

[edit ]

Create a subpage such as Wikimedia Homeschooling/Your_username with "I would like to join Wikimedia homeschooling. I live in state of country." on the page. Then a CheckUser will verify the country and the state and notify the education authorities. The education authorities will tell all the parents to send a video with your student being logged in to his or her account making an edit. Only one parent can send a screenshot and then it will be linked. If this is not compatible with the education authorities, there will be a decline note sent to the user talk page.

What you get

[edit ]

You get an easy to install private wiki. You can also put a userbox on your global Wikimedia user page or a local Wikimedia wiki.

Global homeschooler right

[edit ]

The global homeschooler right can only be granted by Wikimedia staff and education authorities. Stewards can revoke but not grant the right. This is to prevent volunteers from making money.

How the installer works

[edit ]

At first, the installer asks for the installer and program language. British and Australian English will use fortnights while the rest will use two weeks. $wgHomeschoolUseFortnight can be changed to true or false. If there is none specified, it will use both fortnights and weeks.

The installer then lets you select what components you want to install. The components are Convert Template (compulsory during install but you can later remove), Citation Template (compulsory during install but you can later remove), Kartographer (Compulsory during install but you can later remove), AbuseFilter, CheckUser, DeletePagesForGood, EasyReply (checked by default), Publish to Wiki (checked by default) and VisualEditor (checked by default).

The installer then asks what directory you want XAMPP to be. It is set to default to C:\Program Files\xampp.

After the install finishes, you are to set it up in your web browser.

After setup, you can click on a link to create a new account or configure user rights.

Publish to Wikimedia button

[edit ]

Only users with the global "Homeschooler" and the local "bot" right may use the Publish to Wikimedia feature.

When you click "Publish to Wikimedia" in the tools section, you just need to enter the page you want to publish, to what wiki, to what page, at what speed, your username and password and a custom edit summary. You can also select "save username and password" and "publish all revisions". If you select a page on Wikimedia that already has been created, you receive a warning saying "Are you sure you want to publish to this page? You may get blocked for vandalism or disruptive editing so only publish to pages that you have created.".

To publish some revisions, copy only the revisions you want to publish to a new page then publish with publish all revisions.

It works by publishing revision by revision to the page at a speed of approximately six revisions a minute unlesss turbo mode is enabled which it will go at your internet speed. The edit summary will always be "published from private wiki (number out of number done) (editsummary)". Note that null edits will be skipped as normal. This program has the right to skip CAPTCHA and allow edits that trips the abuse filter except if it is set to disallow.

The publishing text will say something like "Estimated time remaining: 0 fortnights, 0 days, 0 hours, 0 minutes and 0 seconds. [Cancel] [Pause]". It will only get to one fortnight if there are more than 120960 edits being published and one week if there are more than 60480 edits being published. Clicking cancel will ask you are you sure you want to cancel? Pausing will not be cancelled even when computer shut down.

Publish to wiki policy

[edit ]

Warning: You take full responsibility for any actions taken using Publish to Wiki. You must read and understand all relevant Wikimedia policies and and abide by them when using this tool; failure to do so may result in you losing access to the tool or being blocked from editing.

Do use publish to wiki

[edit ]
  • To show changes and all revisions to education authorities or others that you have done your work.
  • To easily publish lots of revisions.
  • To revert vandalism

Don't use publish to wiki

[edit ]
  • To inflate your edit count, especially to gain access to paid editing and other monetisation features.
  • To edit war or disrupt Wikimedia projects
  • Although PTW is for education, never use it in a student assignment from a homeschooling program. This creates drama especially when two or more edits are published with the same summary! Students may see tags saying "Publish to Wiki" and that distracts them from work. (Student assignment accounts are linkable to Wikimedia Homeschooling.)

How to use

[edit ]

You use your private wiki with convert template to do your maths and private drafting and you use Wikimedia wikis to publish your work or allow other editors to help you with your work. It is a publish your own research thing. While homeschooling means parents have to quit their jobs, you will get paid for editing after 30 days after getting the user right and 100 global edits in your Wikimedia account.
