Highlights of 2026 activities

Oulu Löyly

AvoinGLAM and partners are hosting a 3-day think-and-do fest in Oulu in June 2026 as part of the Oulu2026 – European Capital of Culture programme. The theme of the festive year is cultural climate change and we embrace it with open culture!

Finnish Open Knowledge Advocacy Network

AvoinGLAM and Open Knowledge Finland have initiated this network together with other actors of open knowledge, open science and related fields. The goal is to share information and resources is responding to developments concerning public access to knowledge.

Open Heritage Statement

AvoinGLAM has been an active participant in the Open Heritage Coalition lead by Creative Commons. We wish to bring the perspective of open culture as public good into all our programming.

Content Partnerships Hub and GLAM Affiliate

AvoinGLAM supports the creation of joint resources and community building within GLAM in the Wikimedia movement. In 2026, we focus on connecting Metabase, the Wikibase of movement activities to the GLAM pages on Metawiki.

Public domain

AvoinGLAM produces each year a page listing artists whose works enter public domain that year. Public domain remains a key topic in our advocacy and public policy work.

Memory of the World

2025
We brought Memory of the World inscriptions to Metawiki pages following the model of living heritage in Wiki Loves Living Heritage.

AI Sauna

2024
AI Sauna was arranged in Helsinki after the Wikimedia hackathon in Tallinn. The event was a combination of a seminar, hackathon and sauna. It discussed the role of AI in open culture.

Hack4FI – Hack Your Heritage

2015–2020
Hack4FI – Hack your heritage hackathons have promoted the creative re-use of open cultural materials and the emergence of new applications and services for different sectors of society. They started out as a spinoff from a cultural hackathon organized by the newly established AvoinGLAM at OKFestival in Helsinki in 2012.

Wikidocumentaries

2018
Wikidocumentaries is our proof of concept of a workbench for the cultural commons. After being stagnant for a couple of years, it has recently been updated. We welcome proposals for collaboration for use cases of different kinds!

AvoinGLAM is an unincorporated group working with Open Knowledge Finland as the fiscal sponsor.

AvoinGLAM meetings are open for anyone to attend. There is no formal membership. We invite anyone to join Open Knowledge Finland as member.
