Things to not ask me about:

Interview with MIT project?

Dear Angela, I saw your name on the Wikimania confereence attendees. I'm wondering if you'd be interested in doing a video interview with us about your work. We're making a short educational documentary about Wikipedia for Project New Media Literacies, a MacArthur-funded research initiative at MIT's Comparative Media Studies program. The vieo is meant for jr high and high school kids, and it's meant to demystify media production (we've already done some other videos in our series about comicbooks, graffiti, radio documentary, and blogging). We'll be coming to Wikimania, but we'd really like to pre-schedule some interviews so we don't get lost in the excitement of the goings-on. Please have a look at my post on the Media section http://wikimania2006.wikimedia.org/wiki/Media. Please let me know if you're interested (vanbertozzi(at)gmail.com). Hope to hear from you soon!...Vanessa

Sorry, I wasn't paying much attention to this talk page in the run up to Wikimania, so I didn't see this until it was too late. Angela

I am sorry to bother you, but when I posted my proposal up fo ra wikijunior logo, I was lead to understand it came under the GFDL. If this is not the case, as the message left by you on the logo suggests, could you please tell me whether this logo is permitted on MW? Its unicef (copyrighted) and wp (copyrighted) but merged to one logo. The link is: [[Image:wikijunior-proplogo.jpg]]. Thanks for your help. Tmalmjursson 16:58, 8 August 2006 (UTC) Reply

Please change my wiki account from daniel.akata-pore@southwark.gov.uk to don_matlala Thanks

If you mean on the English Wikipedia, that account has no edits, so you can just recreate Don matlala as a new account at w:Special:Userlogin. Angela 11:40, 30 August 2006 (UTC) Reply

As long as people are cleaning out the wmf site, we might turn hands towards cleaning meta as well... With testwiki matters moving to the incubator, if we can move translations off of meta, it will once more be a lean, mean meta-discussion machine. Which we need more than ever with the difficult discussions ahead. How best to [re]propose a separate translation wiki? Someone else should probably make the suggestion this time; I posted the last rant about it. Also, you'll appreciate this : [1]

Is there a proposal on meta about it? (other than Interface translations wiki?) Angela 08:11, 17 August 2006 (UTC) Reply

Dear Angela,

I have an account in Vietnamese wikipedia (vi.wikipedia.org). I am currently a sysop. Now I would like to remove the sysop status and step back to a regular user. User:Nhanvo

Please help me to do this task

thanks you for your help

Nhan

You did what? Please add a note on that wiki that you want this to happen since otherwise I don't know that the IP requesting this is really Nhanvo. Angela 10:46, 30 August 2006 (UTC) Reply
I helped Nhan, and showed him Request for permission page. So he followed the procedure there and got what he wanted. --Dbl2010 13:25, 30 August 2006 (UTC) Reply

Incubator Administrators

Latest comment: 18 years ago 2 comments2 people in discussion

Angela,

On Incubator we've had an idea to complement the new test administrator idea (which we're very glad you approve of). We thought, however, that we should run it by you before implementing it, just to be on the safe side. You might know of the system on the Spanish Wikipedia, by which all administrators become bureaucrats after a month. We think that we should have a scheme similar to this for our 'proper' (rather than test) admins. Current admins become bureaucrats, and new admins become bureaucrats after a month, unless there are problems. This means that we don't have to rely on one administrator to give adminship to all the test administrators, and also it is clear for new users who the full administrators are and who the test administrators are.

I hope you approve.

Thanks, Dbmag9

It sounds a very bad idea when hundreds of people are going to have "test adminship". There's no need for hundreds of bureaucrats, and I don't understand why the Spanish Wikipedia do this. Where is this suggested policy? Angela 11:40, 30 August 2006 (UTC) Reply
I'm sorry, I must clarify: only those 'proper' administrators (for the whole project, not just a test) will be promoted to bureaucrat status after a month. Thus they (and there will not be so many) are equipped to handle promotion of test administrators etc.. Test administrators will not be promoted to bureaucrat status. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Ms. Angela, I am a member of the Star Wars wiki "Wookieepedia" which I have been led to believe that you have been associated with in the past. The site has been down for over an hour in my time zone, so I was wondering if you were aware of it. I am very sorry if this is not the appropriate way of contacting you. Sincerely- 128.194.66.132 02:21, 31 August 2006 (UTC) Reply

Wookieepedia is working normally for me. Can you access other Wikia sites? Are you using any sort of proxy? What error message do you get? Feel free to email me (angela at wikia.com). Angela 02:31, 31 August 2006 (UTC) Reply
The page takes an irregularly long time to load, and then Internet Explorer displays "This page could not be displayed." I've checked my connections and I am at 128-bit setting. I tried www.wikia.com and it did the same thing- no page. I am not using a proxy site, just plain Internet explorer. Thank you for your help. 128.194.66.132 03:02, 31 August 2006 (UTC) Reply
I'm not sure what the problem is. I'll ask on our staff mailing list to see whether there are any server-side blocks that might be causing this. Can you access Uncyclopedia? Angela 03:24, 31 August 2006 (UTC) Reply

CVU logos

Latest comment: 18 years ago 1 comment1 person in discussion

Thank you for your post on the mailing list. However the CVU logos had been speedy deleted regardless of your comment. (Please take a peek at commons:User_talk:AlisonW for the more detailed discussion).

I feel that the images should be avalible for the discussion about their status. I was wondering if it would be posible to undelete the images untill a discussion takes place. An undelete is simply to make images avalible for the discussion and in no way is it a board endorsement.

Another issue is that the trademark comitee is unavalible from what I understand. So perhaps the board can discuss the status of the images.

-- Cat chi? 03:30, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

I don't think undeleting will help the issue and I'd rather not override the decision of the person deleting them. I suggest you just be patient and wait until Brad is back to form some sort of trademark agreement for cases like this. Angela 05:42, 3 September 2006 (UTC) Reply

He said he's new to Wikipedia and wants to create a biography of the singer Mia Rauz. It's been nominated for deletion because of non-notability, though. He says he's written to the administrator Sanbec to tell them to reconsider his deletion vote. His username isn't blocked, but his IP has been blocked twice. He finishes, "So, there's someone that doesn't like what someone else writes politely, then blocks their IP?" I think this is one of the comments he left on Sanbec's page. Here is one of the blocks, although it's only for a few hours. Here is another block. Most of those voting on the deletion page are voting to delete the entry, though.--Primetime 00:55, 10 September 2006 (UTC) Reply

A user publish IRC logs in Turkish Wikipedia here. I said him to here but he said "that event is not publishing logs and this is not IRC log publishing, First you should check what IRC log publishing is then if you are not convinced you can go to meta to claim" and also he said "he used this sentences as an evidence rof bad faith in the dispute-resolution process and these sentences includes legal threat against sysops". In Turkish Wikipedia publishing logs are forbidden you can see that text in Turkish Wikipedia channel topic:

  • Turkish "Meta'nın aldığı karara göre kanal kayıtlarını yayımlamak ciddi bir Vikipedi suçudur, Vikipedi'yle ilgili bütün oluşumlardan atılırsınız."
  • English "As the Meta decided publishing channel logs a serious crime, when you did that you are blocked all Wikipedias."

That guy said to me he publish privat logs but he do not publish privat logs her you can see:

In response to your commentary about the elections I initally started my reply with "I'm disappointed about the accusations being thrown around, but petty complaints and innuendo is nothing new from this crowd." I decided that this insult was best removed from the page where it was verging on offtopic and instead taken to you directly. Quite frankly I found your tone there to be counterproductive and unprofessional. The fingerpointing and allegations do us absolutely no good. If you are actually interested in helping the project rather than kicking sand at your political enemies you would be more effective to focus on the factual and the actionable than on the rumors. --Gmaxwell 02:54, 27 September 2006 (UTC) Reply

Why do you think I'm accusing anyone? I didn't even mention any names there. Everything in my comment was factual. I didn't mention any of the rumors going round about this. People changing their vote after being told the results 10 days early is not a petty complaint. It's a very serious issue which the rest of the Wikimedia Community and voters ought to be aware of in order to prevent it happening again. If I'd just said the elections should be run by a third party, people would think there's no point since Wikimedia staff can be trusted with it. It's very clear they can not. Science Wikipedia

Latest comment: 18 years ago 2 comments1 person in discussion

Hi Angela, I am willing to start a ---- Science Urdu Wikipedia ----, only for the scientific matters. There is already a Wikipedia in Urdu language. Please let me know if it is possible or not. Wait for your guidance, Please reply here on this same page or at my email: afrazulquraish@yahoo.com ---- Afraz

Science topics can usually go in the regular Wikipedia. Is there a reason you wanted a separate wiki for this? Have you tried adding the content you want to write to w:ur:زمرہ:سائنس? Angela 06:23, 15 October 2006 (UTC) Reply
  • Yes Angela, I was adding Science topics on w:ur:زمرہ:سائنس, you can see my contributions Here, but ther are many reasons, I would like to summarize below
  1. Urdu, still has a very limited matterial on science, so in Urdu, science should be so large (because of saparate pages for vocabulary, all of the science topic available on English Wikipedia, and many other kind of pages of pages to make the science easy to understand.
  2. Most (nearly 99%) of people on Urdu wikipedia concentrate on topics like Religion, Histroy, Literature, Poetry, Entertainment, Cities etc. They just dont have a good idea of How important the science is! thats why if we have a completely separate domain for Science only, it will make an absolutely different image and transfer its importance to minds itself.
  3. I think its like, as there is a Wikipedia of simple english.
  4. My education is MD PhD and currently I am working as a neuroscientist. If I be able to start a science wiki, I take full responsibility of the standard of material there. Afraz

If Urdu has limited matterial on science, isn't this more of a reason to make sure it is included in Wikipedia? There is no harm in having a large section. There are no size limits to Wikipedia.
Just because most users there now aren't writing about science doesn't mean science should not be included. Also, if there aren't many people writing about this, wouldn't that just mean the new wiki would be inactive?
Perhaps you should think of starting a WikiProject like w:Wikipedia:WikiProject Science within the Urdu Wikipedia instead of making a new site. Wikimedia does not host sepcific-topic wikis, though if you want to change that, you could try speaking to the special projects committee who are, in theory, the ones who would approve new projects. Wikia does host topic-specific wikis, but not ones which would duplicate Wikipedia, so a general science site would not be accepted unless the editors were intending on the content being very different from Wikipedia's. • Ok Angela. Thank you for your kind suggestion, I will do as you suggested. Afraz

Cspurrier; Wikinews bureaucrat; misusing Bureaucratand Checkuser authority

Latest comment: 18 years ago 1 comment1 person in discussion

It's impossible to RfDA him because he has hijacked the RfDA process on Wikinews with unilateral striking of RfDA's and striking of votes.

Cspurrier has systematically been pushing anglo-american pov on wikinews and systematically pushing away editors who do not share that pov.

Infractions;

1; Reinstating an RfDA against User:PVJ59 unilaterally (no consensus) after the nominator of the RfDA withdrew the RfDA.[4]

2; Misused Checkuser against Blueliner who was accused of no misbehavior and then struck out her vote based upon circumstantial checkuser evidence(same IP range).[5]

3; Falsely accused Tohstsalstuen of being a sockpuppet and struck out his vote.[6]

You need to log in with that username and ask a bureaucrat. Only if there is no bureaucrat on your wiki do you need a steward. Moderator requests help

Latest comment: 18 years ago 1 comment1 person in discussion

hi, I'm one of the three moderators on the breton language wikipedia (you can reach me here[13] or via e-mail: jstefanlari@yahoo.com) and we've got a bit of a problem at the moment. I'm sorry to bother you but I'm not really sure who else to turn to - we have no stewards on our language. I highly suspect that one of the users who has recently been actively trolling is the holder of two accounts. This in itself is not a problem, what is a problem is the fact that both account holders have now taken part in a vote and, given the small number of active wikipedians active on the project, this could actually tip the balance of the result. The actual result itself is unimportant, however, it would not be fair for one person to vote more than once. so my question is:

is there anyway for a moderator to be able to compare the IP's for separate user accounts?.

I would really appreciate a swift reply, because the trolling situation is really getting out of hand and if I could demonstate ill practice in voting I could safely put a stop to the trolling by blocking both user accounts.

Thank you for your time (I can read French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan and, of course, Breton)--Neal (Breton wiki moderator) 17:31, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

They baned 10 users on serbian viki for voting against administrator

Latest comment: 18 years ago 3 comments2 people in discussion

On Serbian vikipedia last night they blocked on 1 year 8 users like me for voting against administrator. http://sr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9F%D0%BE%D1%81%D0%B5%D0%B1%D0%BD%D0%BE:Ipblocklist

After one voting for administrators rights in Serbian vikipedia http://sr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%92%D0%B8%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%BF%D0%B5%D0%B4%D0%B8%D1%98%D0%B0:%D0%97%D0%B0%D1%85%D1%82%D0%B5%D0%B2%D0%B8_%D0%B7%D0%B0_%D0%B0%D0%B4%D0%BC%D0%B8%D0%BD%D0%B8%D1%81%D1%82%D1%80%D0%B8%D1%80%D0%B0%D1%9A%D0%B5/%D0%9C%D0%B8%D0%BB%D0%BE%D1%88 all users that voted are checked by checkuser and they are normal users like me. We are guilty because we voted against new administrator. Therefore we are blocked. To all of us just 40 minutes after voting they said that we obstruct project and that we are blocked for 1 year. Here is list of blocking last night at 4:09. End of voting was at 3:31 They blocked following users on 1 year , that voted aginst new administrator:

  • Hajduci
  • Sokolac
  • РадованК
  • Капетановић
  • KordaDane
  • Djuranovic
  • Sunčica

Look This user Solinda was blocked on 1 year although had not contributions for last 43 days. http://sr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9F%D0%BE%D1%81%D0%B5%D0%B1%D0%BD%D0%BE:Contributions/Solinda

And User Lindon was also blocked, because he tried to vote, but his number of edits was small.

What is worse they are explained that I am blocked because of continuation of obstruction of project. But that is first message that I obstructed project. I never done any obstruction, except voting against administrator that said he will block new users for something very small. I had never done even something very small. I never being in quarell or edit war with anybody. --KordaDane 13:53, 11 November 2006 (UTC) Reply

Were those users sockpuppets? They all joined the wiki within the same time period a couple of months ago. Has anyone tried to bring up the problem on w:sr:Википедија:Трг? Have you spoken to any in the Serbian Wikipedia about it? It would be much better if you could since they can read aout the issues that led to this when I can't. Angela 14:04, 11 November 2006 (UTC) Reply

They blocked me. I am not sockpupet. Other above mentioned users that voted are not sockpapets, since there was checked by checkuser. But before some period of time they blocked several users on omth, several months, or indefinite. Who will now present problem on w:sr:Википедија:Трг? I am blocked. Others are blocked too. There is probble fear. Who will present problem will be blocked. Because they are blocking if you just vote, or tell something aginst. I tried to be fair, and never tell anything against them, until today voting. I only voted. And they blocked me for one year. Does that mean that they really could do anything. --KordaDane 14:30, 11 November 2006 (UTC) Reply

The incident of Serbian wiki

Latest comment: 18 years ago 3 comments2 people in discussion

Angela, I noticed what happened on sr wiki, and would like to explain what actually happened. The users that were blocked all voted against giving Milos admin priviledges. Milos is one of the earliest people who got engaged in editing Wikipedia, and he has the respect of the majority of administrators for helping to bring this project together. However, over the years, Milos has started using his respect for... lets say, not so noble causes. This is why he couldn't pull off 80% of the vote, he got only 63%. He actually asked to get admin priviledges so that he can block all users that are against him. When he found out that he didn't win, he got a few of his supporter admins to block almost all of the users that voted against him. Now, if someone mentioned this on the w:sr:Википедија:Трг, their edits will be:

  1. reverted
  2. the users that left the message will be blocked indefinately
  3. the w:sr:Википедија:Трг would be protected, so that only admins can edit it.

This is where I would request something to be done on this matter, because sr wiki has become a dictatorship of a few admins. Not to mention an racist environment (one user was blocked because he was not Serb, but Turkish). Some people have tried to discuss these issues on sr wiki, but they have all been blocked indefinately for "wasting the time of the admins". Of course, whenever something like this is reported on Meta, the admins appear here and start discrediting whoever put up the request for something to be done. Now, can you please do something about this, because if we don't act soon (and I'm afraid that it's already too late), Wikipedia will be run by about 15 administrators and 0 regular users. Wikipedia shouldn't be a dictatorship, should it? --Paunović 22:45, 11 November 2006 (UTC) Reply

Hello Angela, can you please look what is happening there lately? http://mo.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Recentchanges I was blocked by a user that is now blocked (he was sysop for only 4 hours!) http://mo.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia%3ACandida%C5%A3i_pentru_promovare.&diff=13712&oldid=13711 please see that I had 6 votes to be elected sysop there, not to mention that I'm blocked there now. Can you do something to make order there? Thank you, Prof. Dr. --Fratele lui Bonaparte, il cunosti? 08:59, 17 November 2006 (UTC) Reply

Hi, this user is actually a vandal. He in fact reregistered using a different IP to evade the legitimate block on him, and that username and IP was blocked soon by a different admin. He does have his doctorate though, AFAIK. But he's been banned from en.wp permanently for sock farming, and was only recently unbanned from Meta. --Node ue 09:39, 18 November 2006 (UTC) Reply

Taiwanese/Hokkien Wikipedia and other projects

Latest comment: 18 years ago 5 comments2 people in discussion

Dear Angela,

I have an account in Taiwanese/Hokkien Wikipedia and I'm a sysop of Taiwanese Wikisource. Formerly we've used the code "zh-min-nan", but now we're in the ISO 639-3 list, using its code "nan". We want to have our code more formally and briefly and change it in to the new one, but we don't know how. Can you help us or tell us what to do? Thank you very much!

--Astroviolin 06:44, 19 November 2006 (UTC) Reply

I suggest you talk to Tim Starling about it since he's the one who moved the wiki to zh-min-nan in the first place. Angela 07:05, 19 November 2006 (UTC) Reply
Okay, I'll try to discuss with him. Thank you for your help! :) --Astroviolin 14:52, 20 November 2006 (UTC) Reply

Dear Angela,

I've asked Tim Starling about it on Nov. 20th. And this is the article. But he still didn't answer. Is he still active? What can I do next? Can you help me for this? Thank you very much again :) --Astroviolin 09:02, 11 December 2006 (UTC) Reply

It's apparently complicated, so it might be better to put this in mediazilla: to make sure your request isn't forgotten about. Angela 09:37, 11 December 2006 (UTC) Reply

Do you mean Chobot? It looks like it's just adding interwiki links. What exactly is the problem here? Angela 03:56, 20 November 2006 (UTC) Reply

Dictatorship control of Urdu Wikipedia!

Latest comment: 18 years ago 2 comments1 person in discussion

Hi Angela! My name is Afraz and this is not our first talk, please see at the heading No 18 on this same page of yours, Science Wikipedia, for our first talk, that will be easy for me to explain my opinion here. As you suggested me, I tried my best to work on the subject of Science and the Urdu wikipedia in the categories of science and technology. Now the disturbing situation for me is that people (I think them innocent) on Urdu wikipedia are hindering my efforts and asking me to stop writing on science.

The problem is that, they are blaming me for the violation of wikipedia policy of No original research and the reason they give for this is that, I use difficult scientific terminology on the basis of the etymology of the words in Urdu language. They said (or complain) to me that, I am creating the new words and this is against the Wikipedia No original research policy, but the situation is that I am not making any new words and can not compromise on the standard and quality of the information provided on the Wikipedia. They ask me to use easy and simple words instead of the correct terminology of science because they think that it is difficult for ordinary person to understand such a difficult language, but my question is that can we ignore the proper scientific terminology just because it is difficult ? we can explain it in easy word, but we can not avoid the proper term, this is what I think is the logical way.

Angela, It will be easy for you to understand the situation if I explain you a little about Urdu language. Urdu is a mixed language, in regards of its etymology of the words (Just like English), Urdu borrows its words from Arabic, Persian, Turkish and some from Hindi,

Most of the scientific words are not found in Urdu language and these words are used in Roman style Urdu of English word. In some old books of medicine and science there are scientific words of those days (may be 50 years ago or more), taken from Arabic and Persian.

But during the last half century, as you know very well, the region of Urdu speaking people (I mean India, Pakistan and Afghanistan) remain in a troubled and anarchy, during all this period intellectuals were unable (or made so) to make new scientific terminology and continue borrowing words from Arabic and Persian.

No what I am doing is just to pick a word from the Arabic or Persian (if it is not available in Urdu) and use is at an alternative to the corresponding scientific term. So, is it the violation of the No original policy of Wikipedia?

Please think it as if you just use Heart muscle in an article and avoid the scientific term Myocardium for it, is it acceptable? Why? Just because heart muscle is easy? I think we can not do like this, we can write (for making it easy to understand to a layman) that myocardium is the medical term for heart muscle, but we can not hide or ignore the proper term of myocardium. We can write shortage of blood to make it easy to understand for a layman, but we can not hide or avoid the proper term of Anemia for this condition. We can say the brain membrane, but we can not hide or avoid the proper medical term, meninges! Can we?

The same I do in my articles. I use a proper term (please note that the Urdu is borrowing its words from Arabic and Persian) of a scientific term and then I write its English equivlent in brackets. Such as if I have to use khuliya (Arabic word for cell), I always mention the English equivalent of this in brackets as, khuliya (cell). Am I violating the No original research policy ? how ? Is it possible if some one say that Myocardium is difficult so you should use Heart muscle instead of myocardium!!? I think then the solution is to make a Simple Urdu wikipedia, as it is there in Simple English.

Isnt it be more natural for English to borrow word for a term from Greek or Latin instead of Arabic? The same is it true for Urdu, this language is originated from persian and Arabic, and nearly all the words in Urdu are of Arabic and Persian etymology, So, isnt it natural to pick the words from Arabic and Persian instead of using URDU ROMANIZATION OF AN ENGLISH WORD?? How strange it will be for English language, if we start Picking all the words and term from Arabic ?? Should I need to stop writing on science ? Am I violatin the No Original Research Policy of Wikipedia??

Please let me know If I am really violating the No original policy? Should I have to stop writing the articles on science? I make you the judge, and I will accept any of your decision.

Thank You

Your sincerely

Afraz

I think this is better decided by the community on that Wikipedia. Isn't there some compromise you could come to about which etymology to use? Angela 13:48, 21 November 2006 (UTC) Reply

Dear Angela, I agree with you that this matter should be decided by the Urdu Wikipeda and I apologize to write you so long of a text, I realize you are very busy. But the problem is that there are very few contributors on wikipedia and nearly all of them have sysop rights and they are not showing any interest to solve it.

  • I just want your permission on the following points
  1. Like English borrow its terminology from Latin or Greek, Urdu borrows from Arabic and Persian.
  2. I want to give a term with its proper form in Urdu and if the term is not found in Urdu then in Arabic or Persian, and I will also give the English equivalent of that perticular term in brackets, e.g:
    • Micro-tome; I will write like this --- نشتردقیق (Micro-tome) , please note that English equivalent is given just in FRONT of the term used! Urdu text read as, nashtar-daqeeq, nashtar is -tome of micortome and daqeeq is Micro of microtome.
  1. Most of the portion of Urdu poetry is full of Arabic and Persian words, and they do not object? but they make objection when I use a word of Arabic in Science article, even though I give the English Alternate in front of the word. Please see on of my article about www HERE, you can not read Urdu text but you can see that every term is also give in English, even Japanese wikipedia dont do like this.
  2. I will just use the words and terms that are already present in Arabic, Urdu and English etc. NO Any new word I will creat.
  • Just let me know is it not a logical option? Is it a violation of Wikipedia NO ORIGINAL RESEARCH policy? Your permission is important because I was threatened by the person on Urdu wikipedia that they will go to the higher level on Wikimedia foundation.

Your Sincerely

Regards.

Afraz (MD. PhD.)

Ok Angela thanks for your time. I just need to ask one thing, Are the Local Wikipedias are FREE to do anything without any respect of Wikimedia? If not, then there must be someone on Wikimedia who must have a responsibility to deal with such kind of a situation. Please just guide me, what page or which person is responsible to deal with this? Are you the same Angela who grant me the approval of making WIKISCIENCE URDU ? If you are, then I say many thanks for your such kindness. Thanks again. Afraz

No, the projects aren't free to do whatever they want. They do need to adhere to the broad goals of freely licensed unbiased content, but the Foundation doesn't have any mechanism by which to enforce that, so it's up to members of the communities to do that. I am the Angela from Wikia, but note that I'm not on the Wikimedia Board now, so if you're looking for some sort of higher authority to win this argument, you're not going to get it from me. • Thank you Angela, I have left the Urdu Wikipedia. I am now concentrating to make a reference and ideal of WIKISCIENCE URDU. Regards, Afraz

De-sysop of German Admin mo:User:Pill on the Moldovan Wikipedia

Latest comment: 18 years ago 6 comments3 people in discussion

Hello Paginazero, you desysoped another vandal on Moldovan Wikipedia here. Now, I would like you to desysop another one, who was not accepted by community and replaced Epure.

Facts:

- there is already an elected sysop on Mo.wp so we don’t need this German Admin (mo:User:Pill)
- mo:User:Pill must be de-sysopped for abuse of administrative privileges and employing eliminating methods
- nobody asked him to request temporary sysop rights, he’s not accepted by community

Removal of new vote poll

Blocks of innocent contributors

I don’t think Alec deserved to be blocked and certainly his comments were not irrelevant to the fact that this Admin abuses his administrative privileges

Please don’t forget that both mo:User:Alec and mo:User:Dromihete are speakers of Moldovan language which is not the case of mo:User:Pill who is German.

POV pushing by Pill

Here's a question: what does Pill think he's doing? Here, my opinion on Epure's suitability for bureaucratship and another comment were deleted for what reason exactly? Here, a comment by en:User:Dahn is similarly deleted. So what is this ultimately, a rigged poll, any opinion Pill does not like is simply deleted? Here, User:Alec is blocked for two weeks for supposed "irrelevant comments on Wikipedia:Кандидаць" - since when is that a criterion for blocking? Does anyone else think Pill is going too far - I propose a petition for de-sysopment. As far as I can see, Pill is following the shining example of his predecessors User:Node ue and User:Epure (likely both the same person); both can't say anything beyond a couple of phrases in Romanian/Moldovan and both were de-sysopped for abuse of administrative privileges and employing methods used in Soviet Moldova for getting their way. Let's watch now as Pill deletes this comment under some similar frivolous excuse - let's see how well he responds to criticism and complaints of what I consider legitimate grievances.

Pill’s removal of petition against him

3 times I tried to tell him to stop his abuse of privileges

Conclusions:

Due to the fact that:

1. He does not speak the language and we can’t understand him
2. His abuse of administrative privileges
3. His bias

We request immediately de-sysop of this bias Administrator. Thank you.

There is no place for further engagement of Pill there. Pill must quit and leave or will ask again a petition against him. He removed it last time but now he will be under supervision of Stewards. I asked him to leave or else he will be de-sysoppped. You should de-sysop now, because we can't stand such injustice from Pill. He can't communicate with us since he doesn't speak the language. He is also bias and blocked innocent users. He was temporary granted with rights and he abused his privileges. Thank you.Смирнов 18:16, 26 November 2006 (UTC) Reply

Closing vote procedure

How much time should one wait to see a simple vote procedure to be closed? Should we wait more than 1 year? Shall my children see the vote closed? Thank you, --Nicolae 14:01, 18 December 2006 (UTC) Reply

PS. I refer to Moldovan Wikipedia.

The situation isn't something to vote on. It doesn't matter when it closes if the vote was never going to have any influence on the outcome. Angela 14:07, 18 December 2006 (UTC) Reply
This is such bureaucratic... I just hope my children to see this wikipedia closed. Do I have the chance to see this one closed soon? I have to admit I haven't got it, how come a vote does not have any influence on the outcome? If we vote to have new wikipedias, and we can start new projects with only 3-4 votes, so we also need to vote to closed them. It's logical this way. There has to be quicker procedure to delete a wrong wikipedia. Something must be done in order to fulfill the desire of so many people who voted there. Otherwise, I'm serious to propose American wikipedia, Austrian wikipedia, Cyrillic German wikipedia and so on in every dialect and every script there can be. This Cyrillic Moldovan is against Constitution of Moldova! I wonder whoever approve new projects is he/she so ignorant to all these aspects? I mean, can I propose a French Cyrillic wikipedia? At least we have this example of Moldovan one. Thank you, please support us to close this project as soon as possible. This game lasted too much.--Nicolae 17:56, 18 December 2006 (UTC) Reply

Hi Angela, I have some concerns about my user name. If you google it, several things come up. My concern is not for me, but for the people I serve in my non-profit. I have no concern over using my real name, but unfortunately, my userboxes and current en-Wikipedia name can be linked to me directly. Everyone loves userboxes (except Jimbo:) ), so I'd prefer to keep them. But I need to protect my non-profit. These are people I care about a great deal. There's more to the story, but this is the main thing. I cry when I think about it.

Angela, I want my name salted. If I could just go by Nina, I would very much appreciate it. At least then I will now that if anyone comes after me or my non-profit, I have a history with them and can deal with it accordingly. I can't ask a bureaucrat to do this. It has to be done everywhere. I would be happy to provide more details, but I'm begging you, just make it so. I can't just make it happen everywhere. It needs to be done manually for every wiki, so you'll need to make a list of wikis where you've used this name. If those wikis have a local bureaucrat, you need to ask them. For any wikis that don't have, you can request this on requests for permissions. The name "Nina" is already taken on at least the English and German Wikipedias though. Angela 18:12, 27 December 2006 (UTC) Reply

Question

Latest comment: 18 years ago 9 comments2 people in discussion

Hello Angela - Sorry for my english - i,m not a native speaker. It seems to me that you're very experienced in how wikipedia works(or should work) - so you probably can help. Here is my case:

For some time(about two weeks - from 10 to 25 of december) a was writing up articles for my local wikipedia.
In 31 of december the admistrator(he also a bureaucrat) found that one of my articles has some parts(maybe a few sentences or more) which violence the rules of author's rights. He deleted the whole article and warmed me. I agreed with him, and since that time totaly stopped posting any materials to wikipedia to avoid blocking.
Then in 3 of january, probably during the check of my past contributions he found another article made up by me(in the period above - in december) which had the same problem - deleted it and wormed me again - i told him that i'll rewrite this article and did it(it wasnt hard - the 35kb article maybe had just a few sentences which can be perceived as a copyvio).
On the next day in 4 of january, he found another article which had the same problem and was made up by me before 31 of december and deleted it. The admistrator didnt even warmed me about it and just blocked me for a week saying that hi is doing it "to protect wikipedia from copyright violations".
I'm not sure, but it seems to me that, basing on the rules of Wikipedia, admin should not block me after he warmed me, reasived promise "to not do that anymore" and seeing that i stopped to contribute to Wiki already for 5 days and even started to rewrite the articles suspected in copyright violations. Please be so kind and advice about my case. How do perceive the behaviour of this admin(from the point of rules) and if there was a rule violation from him how can i obtain justice considering that he is also a bureaucrat. Than you. Best regards Alex 2007 21:59, 5 January 2007 (UTC) Reply
Have you tried emailing the person who blocked you? Which wiki was this on? Perhaps they didn't realise the edits were before the warning and assumed you were ignoring the warning. Angela 22:03, 5 January 2007 (UTC) Reply
I'm not sure that it will help(i'm from russian wikipedia - and there are only 3 bureaucrats - which had never changed from the begining of the project). It seems to me that the reason of blocking my acc was personal - he simply dont like me and he knew everything(about the rules and situation). I'm not sure also than even russian "Requests for arbitration" can help - this bureaucrat violeted the rules not for a first time(for example deleted a few articles with no consensus at all) and never was convicted. I dont belive that i can obtain justice inside of russian wikipedia Alex 2007 22:20, 5 January 2007 (UTC) Reply
I suggest you shouldn't take it so personally. It seems like Maximaximax was just trying to ensure the policies of that wiki. If you think you were unfairly blocked, you can email im at w:ru:Special:Emailuser/Maximaximax. The block is only for 1 week, so you could just wait and then try to make sure no more of your articles include copyright violations. Angela 22:41, 5 January 2007 (UTC) Reply
I know about the rule "Assume good faith", but what if this case not about it? And also there stil a rule violation from him - couse he blocked me after warning and even after i stopped contributing to Wiki, is it? I dont really care about my personal situation and blocking(my case is only one of a quantity) - i just want to find the way to obtain justice and traing to get to know if there are any way to stop such a bureaucrat from breaking the rules(if i can prove such fact) from outside the local wikipedia or maybe from inside(with a help from outside). Thank you, anyway. Alex 2007 22:57, 5 January 2007 (UTC) Reply
I suggest you focus on contributing content rather than seeking justice for someone who was clearly trying to benefit the wiki by temporarily blocking a user who didn't appear to be reading warnings about something very damaging - copyright violations. I don't see that you have any case to accuse Maximaximax of being the one breaking the rules. Angela 23:01, 5 January 2007 (UTC) Reply
Ok. I see you point - "in any case on suspicion of copyright violations the bureaucrat is always right and can block anybody even the person stopped contributing to wikipedia after the first warning and even started to clean after himself". Thank you - very clear. Did i understand you in the right way? Alex 2007 23:09, 5 January 2007 (UTC) Reply
Why don't you contact him about this instead of trying to accuse him of violating rules, which I don't believe he is doing? Angela 00:18, 6 January 2007 (UTC) Reply
Few of russian wikipedians(which are totally agree with me in this case) already contacted him on his User talk page . In one of remarks he is saying that he blocked me "not because i didnt stopped posting copyvio"(actually i did - it can be simply proved using logs), but because "i didnt started to clean up after me"(but it is not so - couse i started to clean up articles since 3 of january and already completelly cleaned one them). The God see - i was traying to do everything to avoid blocking - i stopped contributing anythin new to wiki since 31 of december(the first warning), i showed Maximaximax my free will to do not violate the rule anymore(i had a conversation with him), i started to clean up the older articles - but it didnt help. Angela, a completly understand you point in this case - on your place i also probably'd better belive "bureaucrat", than the "copyviolator"(which is me - and i agree with it - I just disagree with the fact, that such a "user" must be blocked even he stopped contributing to wikipedia after the first warning and even started to clean up after himself) And if didnt see in this case injustice, i'd never come up here and started a conversation with you. If i'm annoying to you - sorry for that. Alex 2007 01:12, 6 January 2007 (UTC) Reply

Hey my emails as well as this account above have both been hacked into. I desperately need to delete my user account (above) PLEASE DELETE IT ASAP!!! I can be reached on my new email i.japan@hotmail.com. At the very least you could give me the password to it. It would be very helpful.

My new account is at User:Asalat on wikipedia.
It isn't possible to delete an account. I can rename it if you can prove it is you. Angela 02:54, 1 February 2007 (UTC) Reply
The email on the preferences was doghareesabresaikamlosathiyo@hotmail.com. This email was hacked and the wiki password was leaked to a hacker. If you need further proof, check my above comment and this comment, and it will show u my IP. The top one is one I use predominantly(home computer), and this one is my school's IP. If you check this IP you will find that it is the same as the one I put on my talk page a short while ago. I'll add that link shortly.--209.202.75.74 20:43, 1 February 2007 (UTC) Reply

(P.S If you could change the name and give me the password that would help, send on email i put above)

Here is the link. If this doesnt prove it's me i can send you my old password on an email.--209.202.75.74 20:46, 1 February 2007 (UTC) Reply

If you mean the English Wikipedia, you need to log in and ask at w:WP:CHU. I can't rename an account without proof you own that account. I can't check email addresses, so the only way you can do that is by logging in. Angela 20:52, 1 February 2007 (UTC) Reply
I cant log in to that account its been hacked.--64.228.132.88 00:22, 2 February 2007 (UTC) Reply

I don't really understand this. Are you saying someone hacked your hotmail account and then changed your wiki password? Why are you telling me this on meta and not reporting it on Wikipedia? Do you know who did this? Angela 13:47, 2 February 2007 (UTC) Reply
YOuve got it right, and I cant report to wikipedia because you need to be logged in to the hacked account to report it. Do you know how I can report it wihtout the knowledge of that account?--24.57.57.222 20:36, 5 February 2007 (UTC) Reply
So now I need to report the hack, but how can I retain the hacked account, as I have all the knowledge of it except its password?--70.48.212.15 21:43, 7 February 2007 (UTC) Reply
If you can prove it is your account, you can try to get a developer to reset the password, but I don't see how renaming the account would help. It would be much easier to just make a new account. Angela 09:46, 12 February 2007 (UTC) Reply

Hi there, I want to start our relationship out on the wrong foot and complain! <G>Template:IThese are listed end to beginning, as it were.Template:I

The following leads in a circle, and you're right in the middle of the muddle. I would opine it was once a good in joke, but that perhaps it's time has passed. So Here!:Template:I2
    1. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log/delete&page=Talk:Wikipedia:Namespace Template:I--You deleted the pageTemplate:I2
    2. http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:En:Talk:Wikipedia:Namespace&oldid=155970 Template:I--You noted the weirdness of the page, perhaps got a kick out of it... the page back in 2003.Template:I2

    4. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Namespace#Non-standard_namespaces Template:IBut this, in the middle of instructional stuff for 'newcomers' is, I think, no longer appropriate.Template:I[Full section follows between lines]

Non-standard namespaces

[[Talk:Wikipedia:Namespace]] is an example of a non-standard (and not recommended) talk page name, which is discussed further at m:Talk:En:Talk:Wikipedia:Namespace; a page which is special itself, in that the link that is supposed to be to the corresponding article on meta is an interwiki link to the non-standard talk page on Wikipedia.

The Image:Image: namespace was never standard, and is no longer functional as of MediaWiki 1.3.

SO where do they keep the bull whips, hot branding irons, and torture room around here? <G> Seriously, I think it ought to be cleaned up and defanged.

More importantly

On a more serious note, I've been very busy in interwiki linking and infighting on templates and such minutia on wikipedia. One outcome of that was I argued fairly successfully back in the summer that the 'old view' of hiding template documentation was both counter-productive and no longer had a sound technical under pinning with the use of proper noinclude blocks. These, in case you don't know are preprocessor commands to ignore what comes after until it finds the end block. Tuck the usage in the middle, and page composition pretty much ignores that.

So in a small way, I changed the culture to the benefit of the less familiar or occasional user, and far the the better with respect to newcomers and non-technical people, as one point I made carried a lot of weight--most of the talks were jargonish, and sometimes problem solving bull sessions and such... and when some consensus was reached in the discussion, it usually just stopped.

Some solution was implemented obvious to those who'd discussed it, but rarely did one ever leave a summary 'How-to' crumb for the hapless party wandering in after. So how was a neophyte supposed to sift the chaff from the grain, when I couldn't many times, despite software experience back to '76!

In due course, gradually a lot of 'utility' or 'tool' templates and many administrative templates began having noinclude nested usage (some still too over technical for the lay user, but at least one didn't have to navigate two pages to end up confused, and there was both a semblence of organization (see also lists to related templates) and an attempt at making a clear write-up for the beginners amongst us.

While I was off on a real life break, the quiet revolution I started had a couple of repurcussions and a solution set, which is W:Wikipedia:Template doc page pattern. To my mind, that seems to be the kind of thing that is needed here as a world wide resource, as there is a serious cultural bias in many ways against things done or originating on Wikipedia on some of the other sister projects, and I'm refering to English sister's, never mind the interlingual sets! In any event, I thought I should draw some attention to it, and would welcome your thoughts as to how to get the word out the best way. I've imported it to Meta:Template doc page pattern (M:DPP) and I would guess at the least, it should be dissemenated by the Communications committee.

While the long term savings in server loading is a great benefit, to my mind the ability now for a template page to have a face display of clearly written documentation will be as big a benifit, as it costs us human's man-hours when things get confusing. To that end, so does needlessly throwing away stuff, that if it were adequately documented, and the documentation were easy to locate because not only was the template itself 'fixed' like the Handbook templates, but was stable and listed as well with a comparison to others of similar function in a handbook/guideline type page, well... I wouldn't see so much wasted effort and time in squabbling at W:WP:TFD, nor would people be duplicating something that already exists, etc. In short, such would empower the many, act as a resource for learning and ease the ability to do more complex things sooner as one eases into the community of which ever wiki one calls home.

So to that end, I've begun WikiProject template sharing, which is so far known only to a few dozen, as time has been 'wanting' for talk, publicity, and even 'editorial polish' while I've had to bend single minded efforts when wiki-time is available to working out some of the remaining preliminary details. (It is a bit hard to discuss the concrete when one isn't familiar yet with many of the problems! <g>) I'd like some input on that as well, and any suggestions you may have, for it's nearly time to launch a recuiting effort—I'm getting real tired of editing and polishing documentation! <G> The basic system is in place now on seven of the Sister Projects, pending finalization of category system needs, interlinking and a bit more study. One issue I've got is where the line between Meta and MediaWiki begins and ends, so to speak. Dealing with the system software, it doesn't seem that mw:About would have much to do with the Meta Help pages, but I see all over that they are being subsumed and moved to Mediawiki. I've tried to set it up so things will be as portable as possible to even foreign language wiki's, so I'm wondering whether you know of any master planning document of what is going to be under the aegis of Meta and what Mediawiki. It'd be kind of silly to christen the project here, only to find out it's home ought to be on Mediawiki! In any event, when you have the time, I'd appreciate the guidance. Sorry for the length. Best regards, Fra nkB 13:45, 7 March 2007 (UTC) Reply

If those old talk:en:namespace pages need fixing, you can just edit them or list for deletion. I don't know what MP:TSP is but if you're planning on keeping it, my advice is to be much much clearer on what you are doing and why since it is very likely to be deleted in this state, especially if it looks like you're trying to set up yet another form of help page on meta. There are already multiple conflicting schemes like this because everyone tries to start their own instead of improving what is already here. Idiosyncratic names like MP:TSP and odd categories like "template sharing loose ends" might make sense to you, but they do not open up the project to collaboration from others who will not understand what you are doing. Angela 16:28, 7 March 2007 (UTC) Reply
Sorry about that stub-in. I fixed the shortcut MP:TSP so is clearly the soft redirect intended. The current scope document is on Wikipedia Wikproject template sharing. Regards // Fra nkB 16:55, 20 March 2007 (UTC) Reply

Special:Makesysop only works across wiki on Wikimedia, not when installed on other sites, so you might need something different if that's what you need to do. I suggest you ask at the MediaWiki forums. Angela 14:51, 8 March 2007 (UTC) Reply

Neutrality

Latest comment: 17 years ago 3 comments2 people in discussion

Hello Angela. I have a question concerning the neutrality principle and need your opinion. Recently the Turkish wikipedia reached the limit of 50k articles and the question of celebrating it arose. Specifically, following the existing tradition, multiple logos were designed for this purpose, to be used with the wikipedia logo on top left of the main page. Several users, myself included, finally agreed on tr:Resim:Wiki50000tr.png.

However, two of our admins disagreed on the basis of neutrality. According to them, the stars within the previous image, are strongly "correlated" with the Turkish flag. On the other hand, we (myself and several users) believe that it is representative of the Turkish language, and that the neutrality principle is not valid in this case. A debate followed, and (as usual) the admins did not allow its use.

Furthermore, the Greek wikipedia has also reached 20k articles, and they have been using this logo, where the blue is obviously representing the colour of the Greek flag. When I brought this up in the Turkish wikipedia, the same admin proposed me to consult a steward. So I am asking your opinion, do you think the logo on which we decided as the users, violates the neutrality or any other principle or rule, and the admins are right, in which case the Greek wikipedia is also commiting this mistake, or do you think the Greek wikipedians are right and our admins are maybe a little over-sensitive as far as principles are concerned? Thank you. - 130.79.73.90 13:15, 22 March 2007 (UTC) Reply

Personally, I don't think flag colors should be used in this way. Wikipedias are based on language, not country, and using a flag of only one country when the language is spoken in other countries is an inaccurate reflection of that wiki. Angela 13:29, 22 March 2007 (UTC) Reply
I see, so would the use of flag color be justfied in the case of a language spoken by a single country, or is it just "wrong" altogether? - 130.79.73.90 13:48, 22 March 2007 (UTC) Reply

to even read why i wanted to be unblocked as this admin said here Decline reason: "Your rationale is way too long for me to examine it in any detail, and he said this on this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Liaishard i'm at a loss of how else to file a complaint against not only him but the admin for taking out the block in the first place and not thouroughly investigating what was going on, and the user nightscream for lying to get the block in place. I have it pasted on my talk page what night scream said with my notes but i will paste it here for your convenience this block was taken out against me based on lies, here is the proof. This is a copy of nightscreams report to have me blocked. Hi. I've been having trouble over the past two months with User:Liaishard, who continuously inserts non-NPOV material into the article. *[this is nightscreams opinion not a fact] Right now, she she insists on changing a passage *[this is a lie as i am the person who inserted the passage, so i should be able to change it, i am the one who researched it not nightscream] so that a point of view taken by Clark reads as a fact *[I want it to factually read the way Clark said it is my problem]. Specifically, in the passage detailing how the producers of American Idol told Clark and his fellow contestants to select one of two attorneys for representation that the producers presented to them within two days or be dismissed from the show, the wording indicates that Clark and his fellow contestants felt this was a conflict of interest *[this is a lie on nightscreams part because the wording clearly says in the book and cut and pasted into the article for nightscream and everyone to see that clark and the other contestants "KNEW" not "Felt" it was a conflict of interest, and Clarks experience in the music industry does validate that assertion as does the actual definition of a conflict of interest]. Liaishard keeps changing this passage from "felt" to "knew" *[this is a lie, nightscream continued to change the wording from "Knew" to "felt" not vise versa, I AM THE ONE WITH THE SOURCE, NIGHTSCREAM DOES NOT HAVE THE BOOK SO HOW CAN HE CLAIM THAT I'M CHANGING THE WORDS AROUND, HE KEEPS REVERTING A DIRECT QUOTE MADE AND WRITTEN BY CLARK]. Liaishard insists that it's a fact, not an opinion, that it does not require a legal conclusion, *[i SAID THAT CLEAR CUT CASES OF CONFLICT OF INTEREST LIKE THIS ONE DO NOT NEED A LEGAL CONCLUSION TO SAY IT'S A CONFLICT OF INTEREST] because it's from Clark's book and his own words, that it's a "direct quote". I've tried to explain to her a direct quote is a word-for-word reproduction of someone's words with quotation marks, and that the passage "Clark felt" or "Clark knew" is a third-person paraphrase, but she refuses to listen, insisting that no, it's a first-person direct quote. Wen I try to correct her on this terminology on the article's Talk Page (as I have done numerous times over the past month or two), she disagrees, but without explaining why my assertion is wrong.*[THAT IS A LIE AS I REFUTE ANY OF NIGHTSCREAMS EDITS AND TALK TO HIM ABOUT THEM IN LENGTH ON THE ARTICLE TALK PAGE] She also continues to insert a dead link that she herself previously removed for that reason *[I RE-INSERTED THE LINK BY ACCIDENT 1 TIME AFTER I POINTED OUT MYSELF THAT THE LINK DIDN'T WORK, IT'S CALLED A MISTAKE, SOME PEOPLE DO MAKE THOSE YOU KNOW]. User:Geniac, who I've asked for help numerous times, intervenes only sporadically, as he is probably very busy. User:Seraphimblade,*[TOLD US BOTH THAT THE ARTICLE WAS ACCEPTABLE AS LONG AS DIRECT QUOTES OR POTENTIALLY LIBELOUS COMMENTS WERE ATTRIBUTED CORRECTLY TO WHOMEVER SAID THEM] who has also tried to help out, has a banner on his page that he is currently away. This has been going on for months now, and I would appreciate some decisive action with Liaishard *[AS I WOULD APPRECIATE SOME DECISIVE ACTION WITH NIGHTSCREAM WHO USES LIES, CONJECTURE AND BIG WORDS TO TRY AND PROVE HIS POINT AND COVER UP HIS OWN MISTAKES], who neither understand nor cares about the site's policies. Nightscream 23:50, 21 April 2007 (UTC) Reply

I also notated on my talk page 27 different instances of uncivility towards me by nightscream, and a couple of incidents of uncivility from the admins involved as well, i have in retort been uncivil with nightscream in the past i don't deny, but i felt i had to defend myself as nightscream was using conjecture and lies to perpetuate his claims to the admin whom seemed to just go along with what he said based off of his editing history with wiki instead of investigating the matter wholely. Which, of his history he himself has claimed that he's already received a 3rr violation before. I'm not as adept to navigating this site as he is as you can obviously tell by my request to you for help not knowing where to go, and he uses that as a weapon to cite policies and take little excerpts of mine from our discussions and puts lies behind them and presents them to admins to get them in his favor.

Again i pointed out in nightscreams note to the other admins whom quickly unblocked him, that it was I who edited the quotes in from Clarks book and it was nightscream who was reverting them, his notes to the admin make it seem like I'm reverting his edits, and he played that fact up by saying that i was guilty of his arbitrations, please help me in some way or point me in the right direction to make a complaint about these so called administrators and their laziness for detail and the lying user who is playing on peoples preconceived loyalties of the rules and how he attempts to portray me to them as a breaker of these rules that make this community what is. Site notices

Latest comment: 17 years ago 3 comments2 people in discussion

Dear Angela,

I am an Administrator in Farsi Wikipedia. I'm worrying if we can use the Site Notice feature (MediaWiki:Sitenotice) of our local wiki for uses other than reflecting the WikiMedia-wide notices, like those about fund raising, etc. An example use could be to attract users to vote in the election of our future checkuser fellows. I didn't find any policy or guideline in this regard myself (may be I missed them) so I'm asking here for help.

Please advise here or, preferably, on my own talk page.

Thanks in advance Huji 11:53, 28 April 2007 (UTC) Reply

It's fine to use the site notice in whatever way you like most of the time, though when there is a fundraising drive or other official wikimedia notice that needs to go there, that one should be added there as well or instead. Angela 21:27, 28 April 2007 (UTC) Reply

Denounce against Spanish Wikipedia: Arbitrary blocking of users, deletion of articles and sections

Dear Angela,

First of all sorry for my bad English, I'm Zoltan from Hungary, registered member of the English, Hungarian, Italian, Latin and Spanish Wikipedia projects (my username is TheMexican in all of them). I have no problem with any of them but with the Spanish one. There are policies and so called bibliotecarios that in an arbitrary way are deleting articles, sections, blocking user IP's and they do all this without giving editors any consultation oportunity. The last unethical action they did me was blocking my username and IP address, just because I included some information and the external link in Mexican singer Thalía's article about her international official fan club. The user who blocked me is called Edub. This user abuses his power and deletes sections from articles deciding on his own that "they are irrelevant".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Blocking_policy

"Disputes

Administrators must not block users with whom they are engaged in a content dispute; instead, they should report the problem to other administrators."

In the name of many Spanish Wikipedia users that have the same complaints, I hope you can help me.

Your sincerely, Zoltan (TheMexican) from Hungary.

Administrator Abuse

Latest comment: 17 years ago 2 comments2 people in discussion

There is an administrator on the English Wikipedia named user: Ryulong who protected the page Lupin III. I went to his talk page and asked him why he did it. He deleted my question without response. Then I asked him again and I said to please answer my question before he deleted it. He has since twice ignored my question and deleted it. I feel that it would be a considerate and responsible thing for an administrator to acknowledge and answer a legitimate question instead of ignoring and deleting it and telling the person asking the question to "leave me alone."

Thank you very much for your time.

Dear Angela, I would also like to add that I was talking to another administrator about how Ryulong was not answering my question, and Ryulong then went to the other administrator's talk page, deleted my comment, and blocked me! I hope that action like that is not condoned. Again, I thank you sincerely for your time! 68.43.82.69 19:52, 22 June 2007 (UTC) 68.43.82.69Reply

I would like to add this:

Thank you very much for your time. I would like to state that, while I have not created a Wikipedia account, I have often contributed to the site. The problem I have first came about because a user on the English Wikipedia named 293.xx.xxx.xx contested time after time additions I have put on a page titled Lupin III. After a while, I relented and only added information after complying with his demands. For example, he stated than one addition I made needed to reference episode numbers and manga volume numbers, so I added those for the ones I could find, and the ones I couldn't find, I deleted myself.

That did not make 293.xx.xxx.xx happy, because he went back again, deleted my edit, and complained on the administrator talk board. He made me sound like I was a vandal who contributes nothing useful. Administrator Ryulong protected the page, so I went to his talk page and asked him why he did so. He deleted my question without response. I asked him again twice and he ignored me and told me to leave him alone without answering my question. I had asked another administrator, CambridgeBayWeather, for assistance. Later I went back and told him that Ryulong did not answer my question about why he protected the Lupin III page. Then, Ryulong deleted my comment and blocked me for "harassment". I feel that administrators should not ignore questions from contributes. I am the one now who feels harassed by Ryulong and 293.xx.xxx.xx. I hope that someone will listen to me and investigate the matter, check my previous edits, and their previous edits, and see that I have done nothing wrong.

The issue here is not the page of Lupin III but rather the behavior of Ryulong as an administrator and of 293.xx.xxx.xx. Thank you very much for your time.

I don't know why he's ignoring your questions, but the proper way to request unblocking is to contact the unblock-en-l mailing list which is mentioned in the message telling you you're blocked. Angela 20:58, 22 June 2007 (UTC) Reply

Administrator abuse AGAIN in the Spanish Wikipedia

Dear Angela,

The administrator Edub in the Spanish Wikipedia has abused of his power again. I tell you that THERE IS NO RULE IN THE SPANISH WIKIPEDIA THAT PROHIBITS PUTTING AN OFFICIAL FAN CLUB LINK INTO THE ARTITST'S PAGE!!! However, the user Edub is always blocking me when I put this link. Just see: Thalía. This is RUDE VIOLATING of Wikipedia's BASICAL RULES. An administrator CANNOT BLOCK a user JUST BECAUSE HE PERSONALLY DON'T LIKE something, and this user Edub DOES THAT ALL THE TIME!!! User EDUB must be SUSPENDED as an administrator because of his ARBITRARY, PERSONAL and UNJUST ACTIONS!!! Here you go another PROOF from my user page:

"Hola, he decidido no entrar a discutir contigo si es adecuado o no que el enlace a tu página esté en el artículo, no quiero involucrarme en esa decisión. Si otros colaboradores de Wikipedia consideran que el enlace aporta algo al artículo yo no me opondré, pero si lo vuelves a colocar tú unilateralmente lo seguiré considerando spam. Saludos. Edub (discusión) 23:13 15 jun 2007 (CEST)"

Translation:

"Hi, I decided not to enter in discussion if the link is correct or not to your page in the page, I don't want to involve in this decision. If other collaborators of the Wikipedia consider that the link is important in the article, I won't oppose, but if YOU will put it again, I will consider it spam."

Well, first of all, THIS is NOT MY WEBSITE!!! This is the website of Thalía's INTERNATIONAL OFFICIAL FAN CLUB, and an administrator of Spanish Wikipedia DOES NOT HAVE ANY RIGHT to say that it is not!!! Second, Spanish Wikipedia policies ALLOW to put links to official fan club sites in articles. Third, I HAVE asked the opinion about it SEVERAL TIMES in Spanish Wikipedia "Pub", and ALL ADMINS - less Mr. Edub - agreed that the link can be put in the article. I aslo made a question in the discussion page of the Thalía article, I waited at least a month, NOBODY HAS ANSWERED me.

So, the above mentioned all prove that Edub violated the fundamental policies of Wikipedia and he is an arbitrary administrator acting by his personal interests.

Please, help me!!! Many users are leaving the Spanish Wikipedia for this reason. Thank you! (You can contact me writing to my Discussion Page in the Hungarian Wikipedia, or to zolithemexican@yahoo.com).

Your sincerely, Zoltan

I'm not sure if you know, but our original reporting articles are being aggregated to Google News through our blog on Blogspot (Google hosted) at http://wikinews-reports.blogspot.com. Synthesis articles could certainly be routed from there, however :-) Thunderhead 23:01, 13 September 2007 (UTC) Reply

Tsonga Wikipedia

I would like to be made an administrator on the small Tsonga Wikipedia which doesn't have any active administrators. I would keep the project in order and stop spam and vandalism. --Z 19:13, 22 September 2007 (UTC) Reply

Unhappy with an Administrator

Latest comment: 17 years ago 2 comments2 people in discussion

Dear Angela, I recently posted a brief description of a franchise I work for in Florida - USA Best Realty. It was immediately removed due to Wiki anti-advertising law. I questioned the removal of my submission and the allowance of a certain advertisement "Ice Records" by this particular moderator - Nawlinwiki

I only want "fairness" in regards to my submission. Other companies listed on Wikipedia's List of Franchises were allowed information pages. Why did this moderator blatantly delete my submission? This particular person rudely questioned my integrity regarding this submission and, if you look under Nawlinwiki's discussion page, others have questions his/her actions in a similar way.

I am writing to you since you are an upper level moderator to report moderator abuse.

Please look into these actions.

Thank you,

Ariverawpb

You shouldn't be writing articles about your own company. See Wikipedia's conflict of interest policy. Angela 08:56, 1 October 2007 (UTC) Reply

Commons OTRS request

Latest comment: 17 years ago 3 comments1 person in discussion

Hi, Angela — Communicated with you once when you monitored religion.wikia.com and your name is the only one I recognized on OTRS. Need advice, if you might be the person who would be interested in following up on my permission email from Rylands Library which I haven't sent to OTRS yet, concerning this deletion discussion on Commons. Did not use any official template, but library e-mail string rather fascinating. Athrash 01:17, 16 October 2007 (UTC) Reply

Just saw the foundation is moving the office, bad timing on my request, anyway the OTRS response [Ticket#2007102210014251] turned into a comedy of errors. If I have to contact the archivist at Rylands Library again because he did not use the words "public domain" in his release, I need to know exactly what license: GFDL, CC by SA, PD-old, to inquire. The sample statements do not apply at this point. I have asked these questions repeatedly in good faith with resultant silence, ambiguous replies or questionable actions. Certainly, I do not understand the need for two PD licenses on one image. Are they saying PD-old for the document and PD-art for the photograph, Admin Bryan says PD-art does not work for photographs in UK, what, PD-old is not enought? I interpret the archivist's statement, no copyright, as clearly public domain, an archivist photographs documents whether he personally handled the camera or not, and to have to followup with him in that regard as to who photographed the fragment would only highlight the unprofessionalism (read: volunteerism) of Wikipedia, myself included. Maybe we should consult the Magna Carta, I jest, but seriously... Athrash 22:06, 25 October 2007 (UTC) Reply

Open-source Ticket Request System

Latest comment: 17 years ago 1 comment1 person in discussion

Dear Angela,

I saw you listed on the OTRS page. I am an administrator over at Wikibooks and I was wondering if you could answer a question that i need answering. The book b:The Guide for Electronic Theses and Dissertations is not currenly licensed under the GFDL, it is copyrighted. The owners have expressed an interest in allowing the book to be used on wikibooks. However, they are not entirely sure how to do this.

Upon holding conversations with other user's and contributors to the wikimedia projects, I am under the impression that there are two key ways of making this happen. The first involves the copyright holder altering the copyright notice on their website, the other involves the OTRS system, through the permissions channel. However, i am not familiar with the OTRS system and before i can explain how it works to the copyright owner, I need to know myself.

Would the copyright owner need to send an email directly to the OTRS channel, or could correspondance be forwarded from myself? What exactly needs to be sent in the email outlining permission? Where exactly would permission need to be sent? etc...

If you could please mull over these questions and get back to me as soon as possible, it would be greatly appreciated.

Simple text version

Latest comment: 17 years ago 1 comment1 person in discussion

I recently posted a suggestion on the trans com talk page, which I think should be worth trying next time there is a text that really should be translated to as many languages as possible. Now we're in the middle of the fundraiser and I don't expect the transcom people to consider any suggestions at all, but when the time is right for trying the concept, would you consider preparing such a simple version of a text to be translated so we get a good sample to make evaluation of the system? If not, maybe you could suggest somebody who might? // habj 12:48, 5 November 2007 (UTC) Reply

It sounds a good idea. Are you on the translation mailing list? That would be the best place to propose it. Angela

Access request for #wikimedia-checkuser

Latest comment: 17 years ago 4 comments2 people in discussion

Hi, I'm Agony from fiwiki, and I'm requesting access to #wikimedia-checkuser. My details are:

Nick: Agony|
Cloak: wikipedia/Agony

Thank you and regards, --Agony 20:33, 7 November 2007 (UTC) Reply

I don't think I have access in that channel. You'd need to find a channel op to give you access. Angela
Then there might be slight error in IRC channels#Crosswiki access coordination. Thanks anyway :) --Agony 10:39, 13 November 2007 (UTC) Reply
Ask someone listed as having level 30 or above on the list produced after you type "/msg chanserv access #wikimedia-checkuser list". Cbrown1023 talk 20:58, 12 November 2007 (UTC) Reply
Thanks for the tip, I will. --Agony 10:39, 13 November 2007 (UTC) Reply
