Wikidata/Help
WP:WDATA
Wikidata is a Wikimedia project to create a collaboratively edited knowledge base. Part of this project is to centralize the interlanguage links for all the Wikipedia projects. The English Wikipedia now gets its lists of Interlanguage links for pages from Wikidata. In the future, Wikidata will include other kinds of relation data, such as the population of the Earth or of South Africa.
Interlanguage links
This part of the Wikidata project is now live on the English Wikipedia. It has been deployed on three other Wikipedias, and it is planned to be active on all Wikipedias by early March 2013. This means that all languages will get their lists of interlanguage links from one central source rather than maintaining individual lists on different pages.
Technical usage
Wikipedia pages can use the interwiki data stored at Wikidata to populate their list of other languages. Local interwiki links in the wikitext continue to work and will override the information from Wikidata.
- If the article does not have interwiki links stored in it, and there is not a topic at Wikidata for it, then there will be no interwiki links.
- If the article does not have interwiki links stored in it, and there is a topic at Wikidata for it, then the interwiki links from Wikidata will be visible.
- If the article does have interwiki links stored in it for certain languages, and there is not a topic at Wikidata for it, then the interwiki links which are defined here will be visible.
- If the article does have interwiki links stored in it for certain languages, and there is a topic at Wikidata for it, then the interwiki links which are defined here will be visible, superseding the links at Wikidata. The Wikidata links are only superseded where the links here differ from those at Wikidata; links undefined here but defined at Wikidata will still show up.
Editing interlanguage links
Local interlanguage links in Wikipedia pages can be safely removed if the local list and the Wikidata list match. Wikidata does not at present have a way to represent featured articles in different languages, so links to featured articles in other languages will have to be maintained on the page itself. Therefore, refrain from removing the Link FA and Link GA templates from articles.
If a change which removes interwiki links needs to be reverted, follow standard practice by explaining in the edit summary or the talk page.
Interlanguage links can be edited on Wikidata. A link to Wikidata will appear at the bottom of the list of languages.
Interwiki bots
Bot operators using the pywiki framework should upgrade to a minimum of pyrev:11073. Bot operators using bots editing interwikis using other frameworks or methods should stop running their bot until they have fixed their code to avoid changing interwikis. See Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard#Wikidata.
Recent changes
Changes on Wikidata that relate to articles on this Wikipedia will show up in Recent Changes if the option is enabled by the user. See Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rc.
Suppression of links
For individual articles language links from Wikidata can be suppressed completely with the noexternallanglinks magic word.
Inline interlanguage links
Inline interlanguage links (those of the format [[:<language>:<article>]]
) continue to work as before and have not been changed by Wikidata.
Infoboxes
Wikidata aims to hold information about items that can be used in infoboxes on all the different language versions of Wikipedia. This part of the Wikidata project is still under development at this time and does not work on any Wikipedia.
