Volunteer Burnout and Retention: Keeping the Bikol Wiki Community Alive

• Background:

Behind every article, edit, workshop, outreach activity, and community initiative in Bikol Wikipedia are volunteers who dedicate their time, skills, and passion to the mission of free knowledge. For nearly two decades, the Bikol Wiki community has relied heavily on volunteer labor to sustain its projects, organize events, mentor new contributors, and preserve local language and culture in digital spaces.

However, sustaining a volunteer-driven movement is not without challenges. Many community organizers and contributors face increasing pressures related to workload, limited resources, emotional exhaustion, leadership fatigue, and balancing Wikimedia work with personal and professional responsibilities. In small regional-language communities, where responsibilities are often concentrated among a few highly active individuals, burnout can have serious consequences for community continuity, growth, and morale.

Retention also remains a critical concern. While outreach activities may attract new participants, keeping contributors engaged over the long term is often more difficult. Questions emerge about mentorship, recognition, inclusivity, community culture, leadership development, and the creation of sustainable support systems for volunteers.

As the Bikol Wiki movement continues to grow and evolve, conversations about community care and sustainability become increasingly important.
