Part 1: Project and impact
1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
Implemented activities for adapting the RWIC curriculum included the following:
Completed: Review and analysis of the existing RWIC curriculum. This includes the "Introductory booklet for teachers, and Teacher's Guide Modules 1-3". The goal of this review is to identify content that needs to be removed or revised to create a new contributor growth model for RWIC and adapt for U.S. Context
Incomplete: Review and analysis of Wiki Education training libraries. This was intended to evaluate how RWIC might incorporate similar content more focused on editing and content contribution. This particular approach was started but subsequently not completed given the challenges for incorporating web modules with pdf documents of the current RWIC curriculum. Recommendations for this part of the project are to have future teachers implement Wiki Education training libraries within the courses (but beyond the curriculum).
Complete: Consultation with stakeholders and leaders in Wikipedia & Education. Consults with LiAnna Davis and Melissa Guadalupe Huertas were conducted to learn more about challenges for revising the curriculum and creating a sustainable secondary Wiki education program. Shani Evenstein and Ben Vershbow were not consulted due to conflicting schedules and time constraints. These two should be consulted in the future about additional revisions.
Complete: Holistic revisioning of the RWIC curriculum.
- Rebranded program "Wikipedia in the Classroom" to de-emphasize reading/media literacy.
- Omitted UNESCO Media & Information Literacy Framework (MIL) and replaced with International Standards for Technology & education after reviewing a number of other possible learning standards. This one was chosen because it is applicable in the U.S. as well as internationally and because it emphasizes empowerment of learners as knowledge constructors and digital citizens.
Complete: Publication of the revised curriculum to Wikimedia Commons.
2. Documentation of your impact. Please use space below to share links that help tell your story, impact, and evaluation. (required)

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: 1. What changes need to be made to the RWIC curriculum to best support a U.S. program?
The existing RWIC curriculum is more focused on media literacy than on training and supporting potential Wikipedia contributors. The revised curriculum will emphasize content creation and participation in Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons by both teachers and students.
The revised curriculum de-emphasizes the Media & Information Literacy (MIL) framework to allow educators to adapt the curriculum for their own local outcomes and standards. My opinion after doing this project is that secondary students and teachers will be more motivated to learn about Wikipedia with more hands-on editing and active knowledge construction.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
My main challenge is always time. I have found that my teaching load has increased during the grant period and I was surprised at how much time the smallest revisions to the curriculum PDFs took.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
My immediate plan is to target listservs in the WMF community and share with my own network of Wikipedia Educators. I plan to launch an online secondary teacher training program in the U.S. within the next two years.
Listservs targeted include: "Wikimedia Education" <education@lists.wikimedia.org>; "Wikipedia & Education User Group" <eduwikiug@gmail.com>; "WikiProjectWriting@groups.io" <WikiProjectWriting@groups.io>

With apologies for cross-posting, I am writing to share a recently adapted version of the "Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom" curriculum, which is a teacher training curriculum for secondary teachers to engage in Wikipedia literacy. Revised documents include the following: Teacher's Introductory Booklet: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia_in_the_Classroom_-_Teacher%27s_Booklet_ISTE_Adapted_(English).pdf Teacher's Guide Module 1: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia_in_the_Classroom_-_Teacher%27s_Guide_Module_1_ISTE_Adapted_(English).pdf Teacher's Guide Module 2: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia_in_the_Classroom_-_Teacher%27s_Guide_Module_2_ISTE_Adapted_(English).pdf Teacher's Guide Module 3: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia_in_the_Classroom_-_Teacher%27s_Guide_Module_3_ISTE_Adapted_(English).pdf The rebranded "Wikipedia in the Classroom" documents are adapted from the "Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom" program to align with the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards. This adaptation connects the program with a recognized framework for technology integration in education. The revised program emphasizes the first three ISTE Standards: Empowered Learner: Students set goals, use technology strategically, customize learning environments, seek feedback, and understand how technology works to achieve and demonstrate learning competency. Digital Citizen: Students recognize the responsibilities and opportunities for contributing to their digital communities. Knowledge Constructor: Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts, and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others. The "Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom" program was originally developed by the Wikimedia Foundation Education team to enhance teachers' understanding of Wikipedia as a pedagogical tool. The adaptation to "Wikipedia in the Classroom" aims to connect the program with the ISTE framework for technology integration in education. The ISTE Standards for Students provide a roadmap for developing essential skills for 21st-century learners, including digital citizenship, creative thinking, and problem-solving in digital environments. The "Wikipedia in the Classroom" program emphasizes: Empowering learners to use Wikipedia as a learning tool; Evaluating information using Wikipedia's pillars and guidelines; Supporting students to make micro-contributions to Wikipedia.
The revisions in the "Wikipedia in the Classroom" documents are designed to help teachers integrate Wikipedia into their teaching practices in a way that aligns with the ISTE standards, promoting digital citizenship and open knowledge construction.
