{{divbox|blue||As many of you know, the community held a contest to design and decide upon the new logo that would come to represent Wikivoyage, the latest open and collaborative project to be hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. After review of quite a few fantastic entries and much debate, the logo below was decided upon by community consensus.

Unfortunately, both the Foundation and several members of the community discovered that the eventually chosen logo bore a striking resemblance to the World Trade Organization ("WTO") logo: :File:Wto logo.svg

At that time, the Foundation reviewed the two logos and believed that, while some risk existed, there were significant enough differences between the designs and the markets the two organizations occupied for both logos to co-exist.
It is desirable for Wikivoyage to have a new logo for its WMF launch which is scheduled for late October. This will be a two-phase process. In round 1, we voted on the general concept of a logo. Now in round 2, we will flesh out the selected concept and select a final logo.

Since then, the Foundation has received a cease-and-desist letter from the WTO, requesting that we change the logo. While we wish that the WTO agreed with our assessment that the two logos contain substantial differences and could co-exist, we understand their concern.
We still believe that there are some significant differences between the Wikivoyage logo and the WTO, however, such arguments are not guaranteed to win if we were to legally oppose this request because there are also some substantial similarities. With this in mind, as well as the fact that the Wikivoyage logo is still relatively new and has not had a chance to build significant brand recognition yet, we believe the better solution is to hold a new community contest for a new logo.

We believe that the community is the best body to decide what logo should represent their hard work and hope that interested community members will take this opportunity to once again showcase their creativity and talent by submitting designs. The WTO has been very understanding of the Wikimedia movement’s values and need for community consensus and has agreed to grant us ample time to develop a new logo through community processes. (Please see the proposed Logo contest procedure.) That said, we hope to begin the process of community consultation and input in the next few days so that the new logo can be in place by the end of July. With that, we look forward to seeing new designs!

2012 logo drive
<big>Logo contest guidelines:</big>
The above logo was selected by the Wikivoyage 2012 logo drive that took place November-December, 2012 to provide a new Wikivoyage logo for the official public announcement of our move to Wikimedia Foundation. The logo drive is archived in 1 and 2.
* All submitted logos must satisfy the guidelines at Logo#Proposing_new_logos, which have been set down by the WMF.
* Our new logo should harmonize with existing WMF project logos (particularly the "content" wikis, as opposed to "administrative" wikis).
** At the same time, however, the logo should not be so similar to existing logos (WMF or otherwise) as to cause possible brand confusion.
* Our new logo must be language-independent (preferably no lettering in main logo, usable with "Wikivoyage" transliterated in all languages).
* The logo should somehow reflect and convey what the travel guide is about - a free, open source, travel guide that anyone can edit.
* The logo should be scalable and reusable. Consider how the logo will look: on the web page, as a favicon, on paper, on T-shirts, on smartphones and tablets, etc.
* The logo should be adaptable. We may use the logo as a basis for the design of icons and other design elements. Designing those icons is not part of the contest, but be prepared to answer questions on these.
* The logo's copyright must be transferred to the Wikimedia Foundation; that means (practically) that it has to be free of any copyright claims beyond the author's. "[T]he best practice may be to upload proposals on Commons under the :Commons:Template:Copyright by Wikimedia, since the final trademark should be transferred to the Wikimedia Foundation."
* The logo should be in a vector format (e.g., SVG).
* Wikimedia's Marketing Department gets to weigh in and Wikimedia's legal team gets a veto (for trademark or other legal reasons).

Word mark
{{divbox|gray|Legal guidelines|The purpose of this page is to determine the logo design for a new Wikimedia project. If your logo design is chosen as the winning logo for this project, you will enter into a contract to assign and license all of your rights in your submission to the Wikimedia Foundation.
The font used in the current logo is Gill Sans Bold.

The word mark for the old logo is in Lenka font. Lenka, the Lenka font designer, is excited that we are using her font for our "Wikivoyage" word mark and has expressed willingness to work on further word mark requirements. She can be reached through Roger <rogerchrisman@gmail.com> who has her email address and will forward word mark related emails to her, or on her Squirrels in London blog.
To be eligible for this contest, you acknowledge and agree to grant to the Wikimedia Foundation an exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, fully paid-up license to use, reproduce, and exploit in any way without limitation all copyright, trademark, publicity, and any other intellectual property or other proprietary rights in your logo.

The Lenka word mark was chosen in a poll. Discussion of the word mark continues at the bottom of Talk:Wikivoyage/Logo.
This means that you must have the rights to the submission in order to license them. Therefore, you warrant that you are the owner of all copyright, trademark, moral, publicity, and other intellectual and proprietary rights to the proposed logo design and that it does not violate such rights of any third party.

And while we hope that there is no dispute between you and the the Wikimedia Foundation, we want to set some rules about how any disputes that may arise will be handled. By participating in the contest, you agree that your submission, your license of rights in it, and any dispute shall be governed by the laws of the United States of America and shall be brought in a court of competent jurisdiction in the City and County of San Francisco, California.}}

The colors are really lifeless and with poor contrast. Not vibrant enough. This, that and the other (talk) 05:09, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

:I like the general idea, but agree that maybe the colours need to be more vibrant. Try using some of the colours from the Italian portal maybe. And concerning V2 and V3, what about a version where there is no "halo" around the globe but just the 4 compass points. JamesA (talk) 05:42, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

:: Now, the compass rose is blue (Version 4). I ́m afraid it isn ́t enough vibrant, but I don ́t like bright colors. I will look if a smaller compass rose looks good too. --Goldzahn (talk) 10:16, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

:::I tried without the compass rose in my own testing and it didn't look great. Too "spiky". We'll have to keep the rose, but possibly smaller is better. JamesA (talk) 11:32, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Discussion #4
* It's not "Wikimedia" colors, but I really like the brightness and energy associated with this color palette. Travel is about new experiences, and these colors are much more indicative of that feeling than earthy colors or the Wikimedia color standard. <font style="font-family:Georgia, serif;">Steven Walling (WMF)&nbsp;&bull;&nbsp;<span style="color: #8080b0">talk</span></font> 19:54, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
*: For me, it's an advantage that's it's not Wikimedia colours. It helps differentiate the project. Amqui (talk) 23:57, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

* I like this the best, but the color combination is reminding me a bit too much of Google. MAssaf (WMF) (talk) 19:57, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

* I also like this. It would be nice to experiment with making it slightly darker/more intense, particularly the yellow, but I don't think it's necessary. I can see that it's a little reminiscient of Google, but I don't think it's too much, particularly since ours has no green. For the 2013 logo selection process, please see Wikivoyage/Logo 2013
As many of you know, the community held a contest to design and decide upon the new logo that would come to represent Wikivoyage, the latest open and collaborative project to be hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. After review of quite a few fantastic entries and much debate, the logo below was decided upon by community consensus.

Unfortunately, both the Foundation and several members of the community discovered that the eventually chosen logo bore a striking resemblance to the World Trade Organization ("WTO") logo: File:Wto logo.svg

At that time, the Foundation reviewed the two logos and believed that, while some risk existed, there were significant enough differences between the designs and the markets the two organizations occupied for both logos to co-exist.

[edit ]

The above logo was selected by the Wikivoyage 2012 logo drive that took place November-December, 2012 to provide a new Wikivoyage logo for the official public announcement of our move to Wikimedia Foundation. The logo drive is archived in Wikivoyage/Logo/Round 1 and Wikivoyage/Logo/Round 2.

Word mark

[edit ]

The font used in the current logo is Gill Sans Bold.

The word mark for the old logo is in Lenka font. Lenka, the Lenka font designer, is excited that we are using her font for our "Wikivoyage" word mark and has expressed willingness to work on further word mark requirements. She can be reached through Roger <rogerchrisman@gmail.com> who has her email address and will forward word mark related emails to her, or on her Squirrels in London blog.

The Lenka word mark was chosen in a poll. Discussion of the word mark continues at the bottom of Talk:Wikivoyage/Logo.
