Piper Perri Surrounded, also known as the White Couch Meme, refers to a series of object labeled and photoshopped image macros of adult film star Piper Perri sitting on a white couch and five Black men standing behind her. Online, the image is labeled to express willful ignorance of an overwhelming series of problems.

Origin

On October 9th, 2015, the adult film website collette.com^[1] released the video Orgy Is the New Black. The video is a pornographic film in which Piper Perri performs sexual acts with five black men. The theme of the film is derivative of the hit Netflix show Orange Is The New Black in which a white woman named Piper Chapman is incarcerated in a women's prison.

Several months later, on January 29th, 2016, an anonymous 9GAG ^[2] user posted an object-labeled image from the video of Perri sitting in front of the five men. The image entitled "My financial situation in a nutshell" shows the five men with the labels "Student Loan," "Business Life," "Bills," "Rent" and "Bank Account." Perri is labeled "Me." The post (shown below) received more than 35,000 points and 1,300 comments in two years.

Later that year, on April 23rd, HUGELOL user cole6249 posted a variation of the meme featuring elements from the video game Counter-Strike. The post (shown below, left) received more than 40 points in two years.

Three days later, Redditor ^[4] hillai the original post was shared on the /r/me_irl subreddit, receiving more than 1,900 points (93% upvoted) and 60 comments. The following month, it was shared again on /r/funny by Redditor^[5] dashmesh and received more than 27,000 points (69% upvoted) and 2,100 comments.

On July 7th, 2017, Redditor^[6] ohhfasho posted a photoshopped version of the image, in which each of the men has the Reddit logo on their face and Perri has the CNN logo on her head, a reaction to the #CNNBlackmail controversy. The post (shown below, right) received more than 950 points (96% upvoted) and 30 comments.

On April 14th, 2018, Redditor^[3] HEJ_HEJ-MONIKA posted a variation of the image in the /r/dankmemes. The post (shown below) features each of the men with a different flag photoshopped on their heads, while Piper is labeled Syria." Within two months, the post received more than 6,900 points (97% upvoted, right) and 140 comments.

Minimalist Variations

On June 2nd, Facebook account LIT MEME GUY published a meta version of the meme that shows white and black cereal in a bowl of milk. The post (shown below) received more than 6,300 reactions, 1,300 comments and 20,000 shares.

On Reddit's /r/dankmemes board, minimalist variations of the meme grew very popular in June of 2018. An edit featuring the characters from Loss posted June 18th gained over 20,000 points (shown below, left). Another post that day, showing five hammers surrounding a nai,l gained over 2,600 points. This led users in the subreddit to describe the meme as the next Loss,^[7] as the meme evolved to feature minimalist edits in a similar manner to the Loss meme, and the subreddit r/unxepectedpiperperri was set up for that purpose.^[8] The sub explicitly forbids users from explaining the nature of the joke in the comments or titles.
