cksum is a command-line utility used in Unix-based operating systems, including Mac OS X, to calculate a checksum value for a file. The cksum command calculates a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) value for the contents of the file, which can be used to verify the integrity of the file or to compare two files to see if they have the same content.
To use cksum, open the Terminal application and navigate to the directory where the file that you want to calculate the checksum for is located. Then, use the following command:
cksum filename
Replace "filename" with the name of the file that you want to calculate the checksum for. The cksum command will display two values: the first value is the checksum value, and the second value is the size of the file in bytes.
For example, if you want to calculate the checksum for a file named "example.txt", you would use the following command:
cksum example.txt
After running this command, the checksum value for the "example.txt" file would be displayed in the Terminal. You can use this value to compare two files to see if they have the same content, or to verify the integrity of a file by comparing its checksum value with a known good checksum value.
