The new drupal.org site is live! What do you think?

Posted by laken on October 19, 2010 at 6:47pm

This is very exciting: the redesigned drupal.org site launched yesterday. Drupal.org was long overdue for a redesign and reorganization. I've been using the site for over 5 1/2 years, and although it had seen several technical upgrades during that time, it had not received either a visual redesign or a fundamental reorganization of the information architecture.

The new drupal.org has both a new fresh look and totally reorganized navigation and search, as well as many new features. It should make it much easier for beginners and experienced community members alike to find what they need, get help, and see what's happening with Drupal development.

If you don't already have an account on drupal.org, now would be a great time to register (it's free).

I'm just getting used to the new design and features (5 1/2 years is a long time!) but so far I'm really impressed with the design and usability of the new site.

The site was over 2 years in design, planning, and development, and professional designers, IA, UX people were hired to help. You can see how much work and planning went into the process: http://bit.ly/ci2aIz

What do you think of the new drupal.org?

beta.drupal.org is ready to QA!

Posted by lisarex on October 6, 2010 at 10:41pm

The redesign of the drupal.org site is nearing completion, and we’re looking for people to help us Quality Assurance (QA) test beta.drupal.org to identify problems with functionality and visual implementation before launch. There should be opportunities for people of all skills to help us identify or fix problems.

Bill O'Connor (csevb10) is leading the QA effort and can be reached on #drupal-redesign on IRC or in the issue queues.

Need volunteer for brochure update, and another for some writing/IA for the Drupal.org redesign

Posted by lisarex on August 9, 2010 at 9:18pm

Hi,

I have a couple content-related d.o. redesign tasks:

Brochure

We need a one-page brochure that explains the benefits of Drupal. It will be linked from the new About page with the text "Short on time? Decision-maker too busy to look at this site? Download our one-page brochure for a summary of why you should choose Drupal, and information on its features and benefits."

You can see a prototype of his about page here: https://infrastructure.drupal.org/drupal.org-style-guide/prototype/about...

3/19 Sprint - Updates to Download and Extend / Search

Posted by chrisstrahl on March 20, 2010 at 2:24am

This is the current status of the d.o redesign as it relates to Download and Extend along with Search.

Bill O'Connor and Keith Jay continue to be the project leads for this section. Keith and I reviewed and attempted to resolve several issues related to the implementation of Solr and the filters on the D&E section. Several advancements were made in the handling of Solr on staging 5, but we are still running into blockers. After hitting a few blocking issues, we shifted our focus to themeing and management of images on the D&E pages.

Blocking Solr issues:

Redesign IRC sprint - Fri 8 January

Posted by lisarex on December 14, 2009 at 10:56pm

Hey all,

This is an invitation to join us on Friday, January 8 for a redesign sprint.

For the implementers, it will be just one week from the goal of having your section complete by January 15th, so it should be good timing for tidying up those last bits.

For anyone else, if you could help review code/module patches, that would be awesome.

The redesign team (including theme maintainers) will be available in IRC in irc.freenode.net in #drupal-infrastructure to help answer questions, review patches, etc. We are mostly in North America, so bear that in mind, in terms of times etc.

Rationale behind having new Redesign projects / issue queues

Posted by lisarex on December 13, 2009 at 5:53pm

The project management team, with input from some d.o. admins, decided to create a dedicated Drupal.org Redesign project as well as a separate project for the redesign's theme, Blue Cheese. Currently, the issues are being re-classified, except for issues that are in the infrastructure project and related to staging.

Managing the Drupal.org redesign: Prelude to a manifesto

Posted by todd nienkerk on June 12, 2009 at 3:22pm

We need to discuss how we want the d.o redesign project to move forward. One- to 5-day sprints every few months is not a sustainable solution. Maintaining momentum and continuity is nearly impossible.

Initial thoughts:

  • Take a cue from the Aegir project and introduce a proper schedule
    • Require weekly time commitments and weekly meetings
    • Initial thoughts: 4 hours per week for at least three out of every four weeks (meaning you can skip one week from every four to catch up on client work)

Choosing the right buddy and activity module for d.o.

Posted by fago on March 5, 2009 at 11:05pm

As we've discussed in Cologne, I've done a comparison of suiting modules for implementing the "Latest Updates", "Friends Updates", and "Recent Followers" blocks of the dashboard.

View comparison.

There is also an prototype for following friends with the flag module - as mentioned in the comparison. Rename the file ending to tar.gz.
I hope the comparison helps choosing the right modules.
