I had the pleasure of meeting the creator of Drupal, Dries Buytaert, at SXSW Interactive. In addition to creating Drupal, he’s the CTO of Acquia, and Mollom the spam fighter. Attention Drupalers: Will you be in Austin for SXSW 2008?

If you haven't heard, BarCamp Austin 3 will be taking place at GSD&M Idea City in Austin, TX on Saturday, March 8th, 2008. This event is FREE to everyone and will feature a wide variety of presentations, demos, and entertainment.

Well several great things came out of the first day of SXSW Interactive, well less than a half day, just registration really. Needless to say things are going really well and there is tremendous interest in Drupal. Another great thing that came out of Friday's registration is we (paretech.com, Four Kitchen Studios, and BarCamp Austin got together to create a last minute t-shirt for drupal users.

Let's join BarCampAustin for their 6:30pm meetup! David Strauss and I will be there. Join us for free conversation! This will also be a great opportunity to discuss and organize Drupalish events.

Helpful tip: Let's all put "DRUPAL" on our nametags for easy networkishness.

Intro to BarCampAustin

Imagine a full day of SXSWi devoted to hanging out with like-minded people at a bar. That's BarCamp, and the organizer, Whurley, wants Drupal to make a splash. According to Whurley, BarCampAustin will be "more ad hoc than we can possibly stand" and "100% nuts." (Oh, and there will be fully customizable T-shirts screen-printed on demand.) EXCELLENT!

Sepeck was kind enough to promote my announcement for this group and our intentions for SXSW Interactive to the homepage of Drupal.org. Hopefully this will help in making sure we get in contact with as many people as possible before the big event.

SXSW is my favorite conference. I leave Austin both energized and exhausted every year. In addition to putting together great keynotes and panels, there is plenty of time to mingle with other geek speakers at the evening events. I don't know if it's the weather (Austin is a great place to be in March!), the food (the Iron Cactus serves a deep fried Jalapeño ribeye!), or the free (as in beer) beer, but I'm always inspired after meeting so many people working on such creative, interesting projects.
