I just stumbled across this.
I'm a Drupaler who, in December 2009, was on 30 cigarettes a day, and like most code monkey's had a horrific diet of coffee (to wind up), beer (to wind down) and other crap, and barely being able to go on a vigorous walk without puffing like a 90 year old man.
Now I've quit smoking, rarely drink, eat properly, can comfortably run 10KM and I've put on 10KG of mostly muscle.
Achieved via running/swimming/biking/bodyweight exercises, then moving on to the gym (weights)
It took 4 months to achieve that.
The two best resources available are www.stronglifts.com and www.bodybuilding.com. Both for losing/gaining weight and getting fit.
80% of the training info I've used I got from those sites.
If you really want to get stuck in and get healthy, learn learn learn. Then plan. Then put aside 2 weeks full time to get started. You'll need to do this (I did) as you'll be either studying/learning, exercising, preparing food, or sleeping in those first 2 difficult weeks)
Good luck & don't wimp out.

Way to go
First congrats on the quitting smoking thing.
I have a similar story, although I have done it twice now. I quit smoking 2 packs a day about 5 years ago. and lost 40lbs through changing what I ate and reading and learning then I put on 20lbs of "mostly" muscle and then a few years ago fell off the wagon and grew to the largest I had ever been. anyway long story short I am down 50lbs since September through eating less and moving more.
I totally agree on www.bodybuilding.com there is an amazing amount of info there. I also read the book "Testosterone diet" the first time I lost weight I think the newer version is called the "The AB'S Diet" and there is a female bent version for women. These books walk through the basics of how everything works. Calories in Calories out, protein levels and fat etc..... oh yeah and exercise.
I will post before and after pics in a bit I spent a week in St. Martin last year and there are unfortunately some photos of me that should be burned (deleted) but handy for before and after pictures :)

I plan to do it at least
I plan to do it at least twice.
Get fit for a year so I can spend a year smoking and drinking. Repeat as needed.
And I agree knowledge is #1. I find it astonishing the percentage of people that attempt to get healthy without learning at least the fundamentals of the science behind it.
Kinda like trying to learn PHP without learning arrays.
Congratulations on Your Success!
Well done about the quitting smoking part. It takes a lot to give up smoking, It generally decreases your blood flow and stops you from putting on weight. When I was training to get my arms ripped it took me a long time because I too was a heavy smoker. A friend of mine recommend me to a brilliant resource called How to Get Ripped Arms and I've never looked back. It's an essential guide to getting ripped arms and has helped me by giving me the motivation to quit smoking. I'm now a lot stronger and I can run for miles on end. It's a nice feeling to be healthy for a change compared to how I used to be.
Peace.
