Drupalcon Accessibility Meal / BOF

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I am hoping to meet everyone interested and involved with Drupal accessibility while at Drupalcon SF. I'd like to see if we can arrange a BOF and hopefully a meal together to celebrate our accomplishments. Any suggestions of a time / place for a BOF or meal would be great. I'm currently free for any meal other than Sunday dinner. I'm thinking that dinner would be best, as it is an open ended time, but I'd welcome any recommendations.

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

Accessibility BoF

Posted by bowersox on April 17, 2010 at 7:53pm

I propose we start with a BOF from 11:00AM to noon Monday. It would be great to meet all the other accessibility people who have showed up at DrupalCon. We could have a quick go-around where people introduce themselves and say what they are interested in, such as theming, contrib projects, Drupal core, or others.

After the BoF we could break up and get lunch somewhere nearby at noon Monday. We'd need to be back by 1:30pm for the Keynote by Dries.

Interested groups could plan for other specific BoF sessions throughout the conference too.

Unless others have a counter-proposal, I'll start by signing up a BoF room for 11:00AM Monday.

Sounds good to me, I'm in.

I'll be there!

Noticed it wasn't on the BOF board, so I added it. All the AV rooms were taken, tho.

Thanks!

Purpose of Wednesday's BOF

Posted by Everett Zufelt on April 19, 2010 at 11:57pm

Obviously the BOF is a community event and the direction of the discussion will be directed by the participants. Below are some of the things that I would like to discuss.

  1. Where should d.o/accessibility point? Currently points to nothing.

  2. Is the community / tool at a point where we are ready for an accessibility statement?

  3. Are there resources to provide a VPAT (Voluntaruy Product Accessibility Template) for Drupal 7 after it is released?

  4. Can we develop robust guidelines for accessible themes / modules (much of this already exists)?

  5. How can theme / module creators indicate that they believe their themes / modules are accessible, does a voluntary statement serve any purpose or have any value?

  6. What strategy can we use to ensure that d8 core is completely wcag 2.0 and atag 2.0 AA compliant?

I hope for the discussion to focus on conceptual, planning and strategic questions about drupal accessibility, and to stay away from technical questions and accessibility how-tos. There is a time and place for both types of discussion, and each has great value. I believe that we will be most effective if we are able to come together and plan for future success.

Next Steps

Posted by bowersox on April 21, 2010 at 1:14am

This is a great list of topics to cover. I'd especially like to make sure that even if we don't resolve all these issues, we plan some "Next Steps" to keep moving forward with some of the Drupal accessibility initiatives after DrupalCon through online collaboration, IRC or Skype meetings:

  1. Next steps for conducting Drupal accessibility testing
  2. Creating a voluntary pledge for module and theme developers, similar to #D7CX
  3. Whether we should re-start the Skype meetings for the 'Drupal Accessibility Task Force' to drive D8 development and to guide this summer's Google Summer of Code project

Wednesday's BoF is in Room 272 at 11:00AM. I look forward to continuing the conversation.

The Accessibility Discussions Were Great

Posted by mgifford on April 26, 2010 at 1:10pm

Wanted to point folks to some photos I took of the events. The meal took place in a mall (that had the best mall food I'd I've eaten) and the conversation was good.

There are some other photos about accessibility & Drupal -> http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=drupalcon+accessibility

Excellent, glad the food was

Excellent, glad the food was a good choice. Also, quite happy that you managed to get a photo that includes me looking geeky. Thanks :)
