The First Jamaica Drupal Camp

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Having watched
http://dc2009.drupalcon.org/session/drupalcamp-how-and-q
I'm somewhat persuaded to be proactive and plan a Drupal Camp.

Now here is what I think it should look like:

Drupal Camp Jamaica
August 2010

Planning for 100 participants - not going too big, keeping it simple
1 day event

Location UWI [Either MSB or Chemistry]
2 tracks

500ドル registration -[To be reduced based on sponsorship]

Atendee Package Material: Nametag, Stickers, Program, advertisements, Internet, Food and Drink

All sessions recorded and archived on website.

Sponsorship from places like - TECH: UWI(MSB, MITS, Computing), Panmedia, other Drupal Shops, and perhaps even the Government
FOOD: Juicy Patties, Grace, WATA
OTHER: Digicel, Claro, JCS, ICT4D, Hot off the Press or other printers.

Budget: 150ドルK - 200K

Tracks to cover topics like: Intro to Drupal, Site building, Scalability, How to run a Drupal Shop, Drupal in Libraries, Drupal in Schools, Running a Large Drupal project, Maintaining multiple sites with Drupal, SMS and Drupal, Small Business and Drupal, Fire your Webmaster, Drupal and Communities, Theming, Module Dev, Drupal hosting, E-comerce using Ubercart and Drupal, Why Drupal Makes business sense, Advanced Drupal - etc, etc, etc....

We could import an influential Community member for a keynote speech and one or 2 of the tracks
Invite other Caribbean Druaplists - Trinidad, Barbados etc.
Invite: Corporate Jamaica, Students, Hobbyists, Small Business Owners, Other web Developers [Joomla, Plone, PHP, .NET], othere open source groups [JALUG]

WHATS NEEDED NOW:

-Commitment - people to help plan and implement
-Sponsors - To help with funding
-Volunteers - Willing hands to work before and During the day
-Links - If you know someone who knows someone who can help us
-Feedback - These are my plans - throw them out the window if you think stuff wont work and take new and fresh stuff to the board

Why not look further afield for sponsorship and lets do it regionally.....and have a fellowship so that other can attend.

There will always be groups in TT and Jam but we really need to integrate the people from the other islands so as to get some critical mass and increase the opportunities for advancement.

BTW, i need to know the story about the CIVIC platform..Where is it currently? What do we ned to do to get it into use?

This would be the first camp,

Posted by frazras on March 26, 2010 at 3:42am

This would be the first camp, I'm not too enthused to create something big. We just want to have a successful camp for this one. Success is the major focus and not necessarily reach, perhaps the second camp [Feb, 2011 or so] can go big based on the experiences.
That although doesn't limit foreign attendance.

With regards to CIVIC, I think the Administrators are the ones who have decided not to fully launched the site. The site has the infrastructure to support a vibrant community - blogs, forum, mailing-lists articles, etc... unless there are features missing.

Reviving this thread.

Posted by frazras on September 13, 2010 at 3:28pm

From our last meetup I promised to revive this thread.

Based on these items
WHATS NEEDED NOW:

-Commitment - people to help plan and implement
-Sponsors - To help with funding
-Volunteers - Willing hands to work before and During the day
-Links - If you know someone who knows someone who can help us
-Feedback - These are my plans - throw them out the window if you think stuff wont work and take new and fresh stuff to the board

I will delegate some roles.

mscale, Francia, bluecopper & dic_son - I am assigning you the roles of Project managers for this event as well administrative officers. Basically I want you to ensure everyone is aptly performing their role and to keep all project resources including people and facilities documented and accounted for.
URGENT TASKS: Date of event, Location, Budget, Sponsorship

frazras, axle_foley00, epocolis & varunity - will be planning the topics of the presentations, sourcing presenters and timetabling the whole event.
URGENT TASKS: Topics (relevant to Drupal in Jamaica), source presenters, organise tracks

trevorforrest, sumosystems, canen & mboodraj - will be in charge of promoting this event across the island to corporate Jamaica, schools and other technology/open source related groups.
URGENT TASKS: List target groups, gather contacts, design marketing material, determine publication methods, assist in finding sponsorship

If your name isnt listed here or you feel you are more comfortable in a different role please make it known. For those who are listed, yesterday is a nice date to start.

I'll help with the organization of the topics and tracks as well as the sourcing of the presenters....

Sure, I'd be happy to help.

First Drupal Conference

Posted by dic_son on September 15, 2010 at 7:41pm

I'd be happy to help.

I have one question, when is the new target date? T

BTW, I came to the location for the last meetup, at 6:30pm, but the grill was locked. Unfortunately, I couldn't call because of problems with the phone. I waited around for 15 - 20 mins, then left because I saw no one and I didn't want to disturb the meeting by making a lot of noise. Was a decision taken to lock the grill when the meeting starts or was it kept at another location?

I ignore my question

Posted by dic_son on September 15, 2010 at 7:46pm

I just re-read the post. Ignore my question. Team members when and how do we meet. Via skype? At a physical location. Which date. Tuesday or Wednesday or Thursday afternoon between 6 - 8 is good for me.

Fortunately I had my phone

Posted by varunity on September 15, 2010 at 8:01pm

Fortunately I had my phone when I arrived and called Rohan who told me they were actually upstairs and not in the usual room.

Project Management

Posted by mboodraj on September 15, 2010 at 8:15pm

When is the revised date?

I would be happy to provide assistance/guidance with respect to project management.

Cool mboodraj, Maybe you

Posted by varunity on September 15, 2010 at 8:53pm

Cool mboodraj,

Maybe you could prepare something on managing Drupal projects then?

Re: meeting. Skype works well for me. My skype username is varun.baker

OK Great

Posted by frazras on September 15, 2010 at 9:29pm

OK Great, I'm glad to hear all the positive responses.
In terms of a meeting, I would prefer that we meet as sub-committees before a larger meeting.

That means the three groups mentioned previously:

A. Project Management/Administration [Group Alpha]
B. Event Planning & Presentations [Group Beta]
C. Marketing and Promotions [Group Gamma]

mboodraj: I sugget that you join group ALPHA.

We should start a New thread to discuss all related issues per group and a possible meeting time on skype. I hear DimDim is also a great online meeting place.

After all the plans have been discussed and documented, then we can come back here to arrange a larger virtual meeting and perhaps a physical Meetup.

I will now take the initiative and start a thread for Group Beta, please follow suite. Cross collaboration on threads is also encouraged.

LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR REPLY

Hi, Okay so Im alil late on this. Is the CAMP still on, has it passed? If not I suggest we meet in person at our monthly meeting twice or so and layout the ground work This will ensure everyone has the same information or understanding. Also it will give a sense of who is working with who.

I am enthused about this venture but I believe in planning before the actual planning of the camp starts

Glad about your enthusiasm,

Posted by frazras on October 19, 2010 at 5:13am

Glad about your enthusiasm, Seems like no one assigned to the tasks took up a leading role. I guess this will be like a wheel barrow, wont move unless its pushed.
Please look at the ALPHA, BETA or GAMMA sub groups to see which role you best fit and try to lead out in the tasks assigned. maybe someone else might offer to help.

A. Project Management/Administration [Group Alpha]

Posted by mscale on October 19, 2010 at 2:40pm

Could we have a virtual meeting?

What time and date?

I will set up the DimDim meeting room, and we can use Google talk to supplement.

Group Alpha Virtual Meeting

Posted by dic_son on October 20, 2010 at 12:34am

I had suggested a meeting via skype but if anyone wants to use Dimdim or IM that is fine for me. Afternoons is best for me. I can be available on weekends, except Sundays. If we must speak on a Sunday late afternoon is good for me.

Posted by frazras on October 20, 2010 at 1:13am

Say around 8pm? Tomorrow night. Can we have a quick meeting at that time?

is tomorrow night OK for everyone?

Posted by dic_son on October 20, 2010 at 1:20am

I can work with that time. Where do we meet? DimDim, skype or IM?

I think dim dim is easier,

Posted by frazras on October 20, 2010 at 1:44am

I think dim dim is easier, especially if its an open room, or even better we can use IRC like real Drupalist we can just go to freenode and log into #jadrug, or as was suggested, multitechnology, we can utilise the advantages of all of the above listed.

Will be available @ 8 on Thursday

Posted by mscale on October 21, 2010 at 12:48am

Last meetup and next one

Posted by U-Reek-Ah on February 3, 2011 at 5:13pm

There is a proposed meeting on Feb 9th, 2011 at Chilito's. The last meetup was held on January 6, 2011 also at Chilitos. We had a great turnout and lots of interesting discussions. It was our Kingston Version of the Drupal 7 Release Party.

Ok; thanks for the info

Posted by JaDrupal on February 3, 2011 at 6:25pm

Ok; thanks for the info Ureekah. I work up the road from Chilito's so it would be no problem getting there. Please reply with the start time. Thanks again.

February Meetup

Posted by U-Reek-Ah on February 3, 2011 at 7:17pm

The time has not been firmly decided yet. As a guide the last meetup was slated to start at 6pm and went way into the night. So plan to get there anytime after work and stay as long as you want to or are able to.

If you want the exact time, then just subscribe to the group and check your messages or check the group closer to the day for an update on the time.

Besides, I'm sure someone else will respond to you with more information in a bit.

@JaDrupal Yea, the next

Posted by varunity on February 4, 2011 at 2:26pm

@JaDrupal Yea, the next meetup is @ Chilitos Wednesday at 6pm (Feb 9th). The discussion is here: http://groups.drupal.org/node/123644#comment-404294

I will create the event on the group page so that people can signup.
