I compiled a list of genealogy related work from searches on the drupal site and am posting them here in case it helps anyone else to see what has been done the past two years or so. Feel free to add to this list if you find something I missed.
Family Tree 7.x Abandoned Module

Obviously a lot of work went into this module, but is currently buggy and slow (according to open issues) with calls to depricated functions etc. The structure builds individuals as nodes, and family groups as nodes. Relationships derived through database queries. Ascendant/descendant charts are static and limited.
The Next Generation Integration 7.x Module MTC fixes only

Allows a Drupal site's logged in user to be logged into a TNG genealogy site at the same time as long as they both share the same database. Few issues in past three years. No integration beyond the user table.
Genmod Integration 6.x Abandoned Module

Integrates open source Genmod software into Drupal site.
FTree Sandbox Project with recent commits

Imports a GEDCOM file into the database but does not (yet) build an entity. Pedigree display provided (but not working for me). Very fast with expert considerations, but not intended for an online-editable family tree site.

GEDCOM Import Sandbox Project with little activity last 2 years

Converts GEDCOM file into nodes for each individual.

bulkpub 7.x Module in Active Development

Specifically mentions it can be used to import/export Gedcom files. Privides XML-RPC web service APIs to accomplish this task.
GEDCOM 8.x Module in Active Development

Started in April '17 as probably first D8 based module, then merely a proof of concept, the data model has now greatly improved by beginning of July '17:
The basic FAM/INDI infrastructure is now extend by (almost) the full set of GEDCOM Event types (like 'Birth', 'Baptism', 'Marriage' and the generic 'EVEN'), GEDCOM Fact types (like 'Occupation', 'Religion' and the generic 'FACT') and multiple Notes in various places (according to the GEDCOM spec).
