Yes, you can design your theme any way you want to with Drupal. There really isn't any limitations.

Yep we will be @ the meeting tomorrow. We are having a high frustration level trying to get this going it is morphing into an uncontrollable module monster a hybrid between Drupal Commerce Kickstart2 and a normal Drupal7 site. trying to get something that functions well and looks great. iLLin i know you say there's no limitations but there are more then you think for example Omega theme (Drupal Commerce Start theme) will not work with the Megamenu module which just look great imho but anyway thanks for all the help!!

I always build my own theme.

I always build my own theme. Again, there is no limitations. If you build your theme, you have complete control and you are not trying to figure out why something isn't working and constantly overriding things to make things work, sounds like the frustration you are experiencing.

Use compass/sass and just build your own. The theme is pretty much the only area where I would recommend building your own custom one.

Good Luck!

Agreed

Using compass/sass (and susy) on a custom theme is exactly how I'm doing it. We can take a look at how that's set up at the meetup.
