since you got it started, i'll point everyone to: http://drupal.org/node/33482 it aims to add a module column to the files table so modules can keep track of which files they've added. pretty simple change but it'll cut down on problems like this: http://drupal.org/node/133436 where different modules don't play nicely in the files table.
