As of September 10th 2012, the "Drupal Groups team" has deleted our "Large sites and scalability of size", accompanied with the note Note: "Such a group already exists. Join the discussion in http://groups.drupal.org/large-scale-drupal-lsd-projects-and-plans".
I don't think that the LSD group is appropriate to discuss scalability and performance issues of existing Drupal versions (like D6), but whatever, some (anonymous) content moderator has made this decision. I can neither locate the existing content of the old group, nor the group's description (which included a distinction from exisiting groups), so apperently we need to start from scratch.
In a nutshell, "Large sites and scalability of size" dealt with scalability problems of Drupal core and popular modules from contrib that arise when Drupal sites reach a certain size (number of nodes, number of taxonomy terms, etc.); an increasing size of Drupal-based sites is usually accompanied by an increasing memory footprint, and that results in an increasing amount of fatal PHP errors (WSOD) if not somehow trageted. Since many of us are stuck with D6 for various reasons, the old group was mostly focused on scalability issues of "large" and "old" legacy sites (like the memory footprint of taxonomy_get_tree()) that might have resolved or mitigated in more recent Drupal versions.
In the past months, we found a number of workarounds to keep larger Drupal sites more or less manageable (e.g. gielfeldt's Taxonomy Edge module which provides overrides for the core Taxonomy module in regard to taxonomy_get_tree() and taxonomy_select_nodes(), while others have started to rewrite certain parts of Drupal core). Whatever the that of these initiatives is or was, it seems that this group will be our new home, so welcome back ;)

Sorry to hear about this. As a fellow group organizer, I've been through the same situation and understand your frustration.
The LSD group, by the way, is about a program at Acquia and I'm not sure why you were sent in that direction. Here's a podcast that introduced the LSD program:

The discussion forum / working group for "large sites and scalability of size" is actually the High Performance group at http://groups.drupal.org/high-performance
Wiki
Be sure to checkout the 2 performance wiki's
Pressflow/Drupal 6 performance related patches & replacements for core functionally
Drupal 7 performance related patches & replacements for core functionally
There is usually a solution to an issue in there.

I'm sad to hear the large drupal sites / scalability group was killed. I was a member and excited when it was started as I have experienced scalability challenges with both of the large sites I've been involved in which required optimization beyond just performance. @mikeytown2, is it OK with you if scalability improvements are includes in the performance posts you mentioned?
A-OK
Perfectly fine; its a wiki go at it :)
