Public versus private forums

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Struggling with permissions and comments on forums and forum topics.

In D7, is there a way to allow comments on specific forum and its topics for anonymous users, but keep other forums and their topics restricted to registered users? I gave anonymous users permission to view & post comments, and edit own comments, but when I try to add a comment as an anonymous user, it won't let me. Any ideas or guidance would be greatly appreciated!
