Hi, I am looking to use views as a directory. Has anyone had experience in preparing views to be exported as a PDF?

Thanks,
Kieran

Pdfview

Posted by Egon Bianchet on December 16, 2006 at 1:01pm

Hi I'm the maintainer of Pdfview and I'm interested in working towards making it work with views.

Tobias Maier suggested to take the view_feed approach and I think it's a good idea.

However it looks like generating pdfs on the fly for long books is problematic, it could be a problem for big views too ... so it's probably necessary to rethink how the module is designed.

Suggestions, ideas, patches are welcome :-)

Generating pdfs on large books

Posted by anantagati on December 18, 2006 at 12:20pm

I was thinking that there can be used hook for node update.

And module can check if there are any changes in the book.

If there are any changes you can set that on next cron will be generated new version of pdf.

Pdf files can be saved as file on the server and till next cron after changes there can be previous version of the pdf.

By this, visitors can always download pdf file from server without need to be generated at the time of downloading.

I had a non-Drupal system

I had a non-Drupal system that generated pdfs on the fly and the way I handled it was to create a table that stored the last updated time for the pdf and the source data. Then whenever someone clicked on the pdf link it would check the last updated dates. If the source hadn't changed, they got the previously generated pdf. If it had, it was regenerated. You could do something like that, or if you do the cron idea I would add this idea to your cron routine. No reason to regenerate the pdf at all if the source data hasn't changed.

Thanks

As mentioned already,
the approach views_feeds takes could be the way to go.

Its uses a hook provided by views called hook_views_post_view, which allows another modules to do some processing with the view results.

well Thats my undertanding of the situation :-)

Ok, after trying many pdf classes and solutions i came to the conclusion that princexml is the best solution for building nice ebooks or emagazines.
This stuff rules!! ;)

BTW, i'm starting to build a drupal module for it now. Will write my progresses here.
