What web hosts do you recommend?

My Swift Linux web site (http://www.swiftlinux.org) is up for renewal in early November. My current web host is Fatcow, which offered me a 44ドル special for one year but will now charge me 88ドル/year.

The things I'm looking for are:
1. Support for Drupal
2. A relatively low REGULAR price: I'm not interested in a temporary special deal, because I do NOT want to change web hosts in the future.
3. Support for 3 GB/month bandwidth initially but with additional plans supporting more bandwidth (I now know better than to believe in "unlimited" bandwidth.)

Bluehost

I've used Bluehost for several years now - they allow multiple sites under the same account, and their support is awesome.

I have done extensive research (for new businesses) and I can tell you that if I was not locked-in for 4+ yr with my present hosting company (which is very much ok), I would use hostgator or bluehost -- #1 and #2 choices, in that order.

I would stay away from Bluehost if you are going with their low-cost options. Other posts as well as my own monitoring over the past year have shown that they go down at least once a month for up to an hour. In addition, if you are not on higher-cost servers, they may not respond to support requests for up to 24 hours. Not good if it's a client's website.

Other low-cost options often have similar problems. They stuff too many people on shared servers. With that caveat, hostgator's uptime seems to be at the top of the list (not yet enough data to be sure for me).

Another option is http://icdsoft.com/ - they don't do phone support, but I've never had a ticket go un-answered more than 15 minutes. The problem with them is that they don't allow more than one domain per account. So you can't put mydevsite.com and myprodsite.com on the same server, for example.

nearlyfreespeech.net is also a great option, but because PHP Safe Mode is always on, it does make it a little more challenging to use CMS systems (especially with a lot of plugins). Also, if you need a dedicated IP, you're out of luck.

good luck with whatever you choose!

Shared Hosting isn't for me

Posted by bryansd on February 4, 2012 at 6:15pm

I've never had luck with shared hosting companies. For Drupal sites, they eventually ding me for either high CPU usage or high database usage. I've just had too many times where my sites were taken off line to be "comfortable" with shared hosting. Since I run more than a few sites, I run everything on a VPS which is a little more expensive but well worth the worry of breaking somebody's shared hosting usage policy.
