When you upgrade across

Posted by idcm on September 30, 2011 at 7:21am

When you upgrade across versions, you have to step through each version. D4 to D5 to D6 to D7. I can get you part of the way. I made the trip from D4 to D6 and documented my experiences and the process in a series of blogs at http://idcminnovations.com/article/upgrading-drupal-468-610-made-easy. I am about to traverse the upgrade process from D6 to D7 and will blog that as well but you will probably be ahead of me.

isn't there 4.7 as additional step along the way?
depending on the size of the page i would consider just doing a clean install of D7.

Hello, you have to pass

Hello, you have to pass through 3-4 major upgrades 4.7, 5.x, 6.x and then to 7.x and each major upgrade has many changes to core of drupal. If your site is not really a highly customized website, i would suggest you think of doing a more cleaner installation in D7 and plan the content migration. This effort will be easier.

Post for Drupal 5 to 7

Quicksketch wrote up something for going straight from 5 to 7. I personally went from 5 to 7 but just went the route of doing a clean 7 install and moving the content. Definitely the easiest of my attempts.

Number of Nodes

Posted by wfx on September 30, 2011 at 3:56pm

How many nodes do you have on your site? If the number of pages is pretty low (under 300) it may be easier to start with a clean Drupal 7 install and import your content.

I recently completed an upgrade from Drupal 5 to Drupal 6 just going the normal upgrade path, no migration modules or custom code. Will upgrade to Drupal 7 once some modules we use get ported but I'm really considering migrating my content via a script into a new D7 install next time. Every time you upgrade a version you get legacy database tables and there are chances for headaches with missing or incompatible modules.

You have 2 options, (1)

You have 2 options,

(1) Upgrade : 4 > 4.7 > 5.x > 6.x > 7.x

For Upgrade you won't required to upgrade only core drupal, you need to upgrade contributed, custom Modules and Themes Used in your site. Upgrade of the site will be lengthy process and you need to test the site after every version upgrade.

(2) Start with Fresh Install and develop new site.

You need to check how much customization in the code + Nodes + Comments + Users are available in existing site. Based on this you go with one of the above option. If existing site have no major functionality and features. I would recommend that you go with fresh installation and create new site. In this case you just need to import and export the nodes, comments and users, which will be achieved using quick PHP scripts.
