Overview of intentions from a user POV

Posted by HansBKK on October 24, 2008 at 8:41am

In researching the current state of Drupal's image handling, I've been taking notes and am currently getting a new section organized in the Handbook to help fellow noobs with this issue.

My understanding is that some of the limitations in Drupal's image handling are actually from D5/6 core file-handling, and although I don't yet understand these developments, I'm hoping they will remove some of those limitations.

It may be a bit off-topic in both places, but I've posted a brief summary of what I perceive as the issues, as well as links to here and elsewhere to help others in researching the D7 developments.

If someone who actually knows enough about these could give a quick layman's sketch of what's going on, it would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to either post here, comment to or edit that page directly, whatever you feel appropriate.

Thanks in advance.

Not since D6

About http://drupal.org/node/325525, please not that your basic assumptions are just wrong. It's is very well technically possible to have one file attached to several nodes. That's because the schema is split (since D6) between:

  • the files table, that stores information (path, size, etc.) about a given file
  • the upload table, that stores relationships between files and nodes

Exactly the kind of feedback I'm looking for. I've updated the post; please check out my changes. If I'm still mis-stating things, or you have other feedback, please let me know, either here, via a comment there or even by directly editing the node yourself if you prefer.

Thanks for your help!

As the name implies, the "upload" table is used by the Upload module only.

I didn't realize this, and was speaking in this HB page about image-handling modules in general, rather than just Upload. Is Upload module in D6 capable in practice of "re-attaching" an already uploaded file to multiple nodes, or does it still require re-uploading duplicates?

On the bigger picture, I still haven't found any docs explaining what expanded capabilities the new File APIs will enable from a users POV, so contributors more knowledgeable than me are welcome to directly edit this page, as it stands now it's not much more than a stub with links. Or of course if there's a better place for this information, once it's in place let me know and I'll link to it from these handbook pages.

Thanks for the feedback so far. Those interested can see the diff here

not many user facing improvements yet

That's because at this point there's really not many user facing improvements. Most of it's been aimed at providing a better framework for developers so that they're not continually re-inventing the wheel. I'd love to get to the point were we can add some cool user candy... the file browser would be one such change.
